backup/restore with incremental backups

Post by *eydaimon »

TC can already do directory comparison and what not, so one would think it's not too far fetched for it to also become a complete backup solution with incremental backups and optional restores to either a new location or the original path.

I'd love to see this.

I have indeed considered to create a backup program from TC code, but I have decided against it for several reasons. The most important is restore: A special boot CD would be needed which could read and write NTFS. That's far beyond my capabilities, and only the most advanced backup tools like Acronis TrueImage support that (via a special Linux boot CD).

I think you could still tailor it to TC's current capabilities. Boot CD is only important if you're trying to restore the OS or some such, which you could simply decide is out of scope.

I'm simply talking making backups of for example, pictures, movies, or whatever files the user selects. Then it's up to them to provide an OS which can read the filesystem.

In fact, why is the boot CD required fpr acronis? I tend never to make them when I do backups? My backups would be useless without an OS to handle the files anyway, and that usually only requires a reinstall, and ofcourse the OS is bootable...

I wonder what your other reasons were :)

Would be nice to have an option
in COPY / MOVE / PACK Dialog
to do files with specific attributes like f.ex. -a- only

and to remove the -a- attribute (attrib -a) just as second action to COPY / MOVE / PACK

I mean i want to copy all files with A attribute only
and have an checkbox to remove this attribute from all copied files.

I know i could use maybe user defined columns with plugin tc>attrib
or an good archiver like zip or rar with internal option 'remove A'
but... to see this options in TC standard dialogs would be nice.
