In TotalCMD 7.5B6 the "Compare by content" uses only the file from the current (active) filelist and ignores whatever you've selected in the other filelist (you have to add that manually before being able to compare).

This may indeed be the case.I think you just put your cursor above the files.
Just a little addition: It suffices to select the file in the target/inactive panel. Then this selectd file is compared with the file under the cursor in the active panel (if no file is selected there).You have to select the two files. (press space on it so they get red.)
What I did was trying to compare two files and I marked both with space and then selected the "Compare by content". The viewer then came up with only a file in one side and the other one blank.
I tried again 3 times with the same result (that I had to manually select the second file).
Then I closed TC and started it again and tried again, but this time it worked as expected with both files compared with differences highlighted.
