How to update TC and its plugins automatically?

Post by *ceav »

I think TC should have this function.

This is inconvenient in the extreme on TC, especially updating its plugins.

HUNDREDS !

• About TC itself, this has been discussed many times, please use the Search…

• There are HUNDREDS of plug-ins - plus various tools- so if you want to wait for ages at every start up…
- Sorry, but personally, I don't support both :

1. Here, I've FIVE TC versions installed, so an auto-update from an installer looking for a single key in the Registry doesn't the trick at all.
- Thus, I always update my TC by hand.

2. I use a few plug-ins and tools, so I'm quite able to update them as and when required, no need for an octopus function…

FIREFOX has thousands upon thousands addons. At least, TC should have "CLICK BUTTON" to update its plugins by hand.

Most TC users only use one version!

I have used 53 plug-ins. It's terrible to download plug-ins from internet one by one by hand for update .

Please be patient. AFAIK BuKoX (an author of TC PP) is working on updater.

I have also made .NET tool for that purpose long time ago (no longer available) but I had to abandon that due the lack of the time (keeping the base updated take a lot).

For time being the only thing you can do is to subscribe to RSS channels on plugins sites.

The main questions are:

1. Where should the updater look for an update ?
- the official site holds only few of them, which are rarely up to date
- the semi-official sites like totalcmd.net or totalcmd.pl and alike, which have different sets and versions

2. Who will pay for this extra traffic ?
(note that the semi-official sites are private ones)

3. What is the benefit of the extra traffic over the existing RSS feed ?
- in case of TC the last update period was 1 year (7.04a: 08.08.08 - 7.50: 09.09.09)
- development of most of the plugins has been stopped, only few (1 %) are updated regularly => a lot of traffic for nothing

My opinion on this is: RSS feed is sufficient !
Furthermore: using always the latest version doesn't mean that this one is as stable as your current version ...

As Claude mentioned a couple of posts above, it has been discussed extensively in the past. I also think a "plugins update notifier" (at least) would be great but it seems that no one (including me) was interested to start such a project.

Great news. Let's hope he manages to create a properly-working utility and also have the time to maintain it.

Didn't they used to have a file system plugin called "Versions" that did that?
chmod a+x /bin/laden -- Allows anyone the permission to execute /bin/laden

How do I un-overwrite all my data?

Yes, sort-of. I still use it under Firefox for updating misc utilities i use. I found TC's version not very convenient because i also had to research and organize all TC plugins, which was quite some work.
