Wish: Integrate NTFS Index-based Search Option into TC

Post by *Matthias030 »

Hello,

is it possible to integrate a NTFS-Index-based Search into TC Search Function?
Often I use the tool "Visual TFind" http://www.breto.net/programas/vtfind.php This search is much more faster than the built-in TC function.
An integration would give TC a massive speed boost for searching.

Thank you!

That is a very odd download, it includes a file:
TCMC.exe, 32.5 KB, 03/24/2009, v0.12 by Maciej Adamczyk...
Except the 'real' TCMC @ totalcmd.pl is:
TCMC.exe, 2.92 KB, 12/02/2006
And the 32.5 KB file has the 2006 copywright info in the binary. TCMC originally wasn't upx packed.
[so it can't just be an unpacked copy of it]. (not upx, upack)

Windows in general is moving away from Admin enabled logins. It looks like this particular search tool tfind.exe scans the NTFS MFT (master file table) directly -- and requires an Admin login to do so. Also it only works on NTFS not FAT32 or linux EXT# or Mac's HFS -- of which many users are on FAT drives or running TC with Wine or Crossover.

Visual TFind written by one author as a GUI onto another Program by another author... The licenses in question seem to be "Freeware" at best. As well considering all the VTFind limitations it would seem far too niche for integration into TC.

A fast search tool that searches as fast as you can type the query - is Everything Search Engine. With about 500GB of files over 3 drives, it's built index was only ~500kb -- and it doesn't need to continually scan the MFT. (nor is it limited to NTFS only)**

**: Apparently it is limited to NTFS.

Hello :),
As information/clarification:
And the 32.5 KB file has the 2006 copywright info in the binary. TCMC originally wasn't upx packed so it can't just be an unpacked copy of it.
The original file from the author m^2 is packed with Upack (not with UPX).
The reason for distribute this unpacked version within vtfind is to avoid false positives to users.
Time ago, I sent to the author a package with several versions of the unpacked TCMC.exe. Posted here.
This unpacked file was distributed with the permission of the author.
and also includes some frankenstein version of TCMC.
The original TCMC file unpacked was not distributed, because the author m^2 lost the original code :(

Regards.
I can read English, but... I write like Tarzan. (sorry)

Sorry, that is wrong !
Everything uses the MFT and it scans NTFS only !
I know that as I use even the latest beta from its forums.

Well I would question if EverythingSE, really continually searches the MFT or not, as it builds an Everything.db file.

The rest has been corrected, thanks.
*BLINK* TC9 Added WM_COPYDATA and WM_USER queries for scripting.

Everything SE looks good, but I am looking for a fast search inside Total Commander (ALT+F7). I don't want to install separate software.

And yes, of course this fast search only works with NTFS drives. Maybe Total Commander could do a check before searching, if the target drive is NTFS formated or not. That should not really be a problem.

Thank you,
Matthias
