File Delete very very slow

Hi,

This may have already been reported but in case it didn't:
Deleting file has become very very slow in TC7.50a (I'm using Windows XP SP3, Kapsersky Internet Security 2009).

First, before the deletion occurs, it takes a good 30 seconds between the time the progress window is shown and the deletion starts, with a lot of HD activity.
When I wanted to delete about a few 100's of files, it took 10 min to do 10% of them (in the background). I had to cancel. I used Windows Explorer and it took 1 min to do the remaining 90% of the delete, a massive difference.
I use TC all the time and I did not experience such a bad performance in version 7.0.

The initial time is required to calculate the size of all files to be deleted.
(Just to display the overall progressbar)

Additional TC has to delete (or at least to check for) the thumbnails and descript.ion entries.

You may press Esc to cancel calculations and to begin deleting.

Try to uncheck option 'before copying/deleting' in 'Calculate space occupied by subdirectories' group of Operation settings page.

Try emptying your recycle bin. Windows takes a lot of time to start deleting to recycle bin if the bin is quite full.

Hi,

This happens to me as well from time to time. It looks really like a sort of virus. Example: deleting a directory of icons (è-- bytes each!) may take up to 2-3 seconds per file !!! Normally it is done almost instantly.

I don't think it is anything like a virus. A system restore (Ghost like) is usually needed to restore the situation, until the next time... After those restores I recreate a ghost like backup which will be used the next time.

The problem exists also with other programs, like Delphi ( compiler works very slowly.

No idea what happens.

Have you checked in task manager if anything takes a lot of CPU? I get such slowdowns when the virus scanner updates its detection strings.

I don't think that it is a folder size calculation issue as it happens even when deleting a few files in the same folder.

No, but I did find the reason.

It is a bug (probably) in the latest version of Zone Alarm, v9 (?). I've been using this firewall for years with no problems, and without needing to turn off XP's firewall. This version doesn't take care of that and I was living with two firewalls...

Stopping ZA solved the problem.

I had a similar problem with copying files. As we are using the same Anti Virus, perhaps the same solution will work?

Most of antivirus programs, specially Kaspersky's, are very heavy when its security configuration is high, in that cases they're always checking all files accesses so, when you are deleting a file you're also accessing it. That's why, when TC needs to delete one of the selected files, it has to wait that antivirus finishes.

Disable the antivirus or get down the security level and then try to delete you files, should be much faster

If you want to delete file very fast try to keep empty your recycle bin.
If your recycle bin contain more file it take time to move file in recycle bin.

As I said, I tried deleting using TC and it took too long to do even 25% of the deletion, Then, switching to MS Explorer, it took a few seconds.

What I don't understand is the difference between TC and MS Explorer. On the same machine, TC is way slower that Windows Explorer on the same task, they both act under the supervision on the same AV and using the same full Recycle Bin.

The observations so far do not seem to match with the suggestions.

Also, it was not like that using TC 5.1 under the same AV and full recycle bins.

Keep in mind, that antivirus software always has a kind of trusted relationship to MS products (especially MS Explorer).
Non MS products are usually seen as potentially malware.
As a matter of fact TC is such a non MS product.

In such cases it is often helpful to add "totalcmd.exe" to the exclusion list of your antivirus program.
This is quiet save, as TC has an internal check against modifications (by malware or hacker).
