In my opinion, the only thing he needs to totalcmd is a tab bar holding the two panels, like a web browser like Mozilla Firefox.
Because sometimes we're working on different things and we have to open another instance of totalcmd.

tab bar
i'm not sure if i understand you correctly, but do you mean folder tabs? because you can enable tabs under:
configuration > options > layout (left hand side) > then check the box "show folder tabs"
then to configure the tabs, go to:
configuration > options > folder tabs (left hand side)
on the right, you can select what behavior you want the tabs to have.
i select "show tab header also when there is one tab" and a couple others.
however, some operations like comparing directories and stuff make it so i do have to start a new instance of total commander, but i don't mind in that case... some operations i like to keep in a different instance, in case it crashes.... but total commander has not crashed for me ever... seriously.
hope this helps
