High CPU utilization while idle

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

High CPU utilization while idle

Post by *Blight »

Hi,

Recently, I've started to encounter high CPU usage by TC while idle when extracting using an external extractor (WinRAR).

Here's a screenshot from process exporer:
Image: http://t.inmatrix.com/tc.png

A more detailed description:
1. Selecting a large file from within a RAR archive.
2. Copying the file from the archive to a disk drive on a physical disk .
3. The extraction becomes extremely slow and pausing the extraction, you can see a lot of hard disk activity (long after the disk cache has cleared). Closing TC instantly stops the disk activity.

I also had a case when re-opening TC restarted the disk activity and CPU usage.

Any ideas?

Ok, I have more information.

I used sysinternals process monitor to monitor total commander's file access and it seems that the high CPU and file access is caused by total commander opening and reading the entire recycle bin directory.

Here's a screenshot:

So the question is, any special reason that TC is going over the contents of the recycle bin? And why is it doing it in the background with no notification?

I know the solution is to clear the recycle bin, which is what I plan on doing, the issue was, I erased a lot of files and I didn't have a clue why my system slowed down in conjunction with TC usage.

No, TC shouldn't access the recycle bin, except when deleting to it, or when something changes there and you use "watch directory changes" (lower part in Configuration - Option - Refresh).

That's odd,
I don't have any of the refresh settings enabled and I never open the recycle bin through TC.

And while I did erase a lot of files to the recycle bin (over 9000 files) through TC, TC's recycle bin file access was performed after multiple restarts (of TC).

Most of the files that were erased were MP3 files if that makes a difference.

Maybe it's caused by Windows doing some cleanup? Is the disk quite full?
