Problem with toolbar icons

Post by *ay222 »

Happy new year for all of you :)

The icons with size 32x32 appear very good and clearly in toolbar
but when i use icons with size 24x24 or 16x16 doesn't appear clearly as it appear with other programs also i resize the toolbar to the icon size. i prefer to use 24x24 icons because it doesn't take much space but its bad appearance annoying me. Why this happen? and is there is a way to fix this?

Thanks

:D Hello!
In any case, a reduced 32*32 >>> 24*24 icon can't look very nice...
In a 32*32 you have of course 1024 pixels.
In a 24*24 you have only 576 pixels, so 448 pixels are lost...
Whether the original 32*32 is a 16-colour icon, itsn't too bad... I think it's like you tell with originals as 256-colour or more...
please, could you show some screen-shots to compare?

¤ A solution might be to use bitmaps (and not icons) for this medium size (24), but isn't supported currently...
¤ Moreover, the button-bar(s) support(s) a single real size actually, please check the topics here, that has been discussed recently...
:) Friendly regards, and Happy New Year,
Claude

unfortunately i don't have a web site to upload a screen shots

i had tested bitmaps but it gaves me the same results or worse
moreover when i use a resourse icon with three icons size 16*16,24*24 and 32*32 TC always take the 32*32 icon regardless the toolbar size
¤ Moreover, the button-bar(s) support(s) a single real size actually, please check the topics here, that has been discussed recently...
Where is the link

Thanks a lot

 Hummm ... I could host it (them) whether you could send attached...
:( Unfortunately, you can't use the Forum user's Email below...
 Please, go to my Web Pages, and get my direct Email, then you'll be able to send your images in order I'll place them, reachable from a public folder of mine. The attachment size limit is... 10 MB Enough?
:?: What do you think?
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_
 Multi-frames icons are not supported fully! Bitmaps too...
TC takes always the 32*32... I guess that came from the old 16-bit features (Win 3.1 knows only 32*32 and 16 colours!)
Did you try 16*16 in an ICL / icon DLL?
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

and too:

 ...pointing also to a French topic, but I made a translation for Lefteous, you'll find it easily among the replies of these threads...
8) To be continued, especially since I didn't get any reply from Christian G. yet...
Friendly regards,
HAPPY NEW YEAR... (maybe a bit late or early, here it's GMT+1, so: 2004!)

Yup. TC 6.01 does not display 24x24 icons. This is the size used in Explorer in XP. TC 5.5 did display 24x24 icons fine.

Please fix...

:D Hello!

¤ I just tested a 24*24 original icon .ico in the button-bar.
 That works fine with TC 5.51, like you told,
 That works fine too with TC 6.01!
 I drawn that icon especially to make this test, simply converting a 24*24 BMP into Win Icon with XnView ("Save as..." >> Win Icon)
:? Of course, the usual restrictions described in the other posts above are applied (about the single possible size for all bars and so on...)
 That deserves an improvement, sure...

 Tested under Win98SE (French)
:?: Please, could you say what OS you are running?
Best regards,
friendly,
Claude

OK, Here's some screen shots off my web site:

This is the 24x24 icons displayed in 5.5 - look perfect, XP style and all:
http://www.abxzone.com/totalcmd/totalcmd55icons.jpg

Here are the exact same icons (same .icl file) in 6.0 - look very blurry and messy:
http://www.abxzone.com/totalcmd/totalcmd60icons.jpg

Same exact .icl, same exact bar file, same everything...

That should make it clear what the difference is...

:) Ok, John!
I'll test under XP-Pro too as so soon as possible!
EDIT:  Right, that doesn't look pretty under XP at your's!
 please, could you try some simple *.ico 24*24 files, instead icons embedded within an ICL?
:? huummm... It's almost midnight here, and I didn't dine yet
 One hour later :?:

Per your request, I tried what you suggested, but no luck. Exact same result.

If it would help, I have uploaded my icl file to my site:

:D Hi John!
¤ I tested under XP-Home, using the same 24*24 original icon: that looks normal…(RAM=256MB)
¤ Also under XP-Pro (none SP installed), the same: it looks nice too... (RAM=1GB)
:?: Have you TC 5.5 and TC 6.01 both in the same machine?
 I thought to a graphic-card / its driver problem for one, if you have XP installed in a different PC?
 I'll get your ICL, and test again a bit later (the coffee to drink)
Glad to hear more about this,
:) Friendly,
Clo

Behavior confirmed! This is defintely a bug.

If you start 5.51 and make TC rebuild the *.br1 buttonbar bitmap cache file and then start TC 6.01 you will a get nice buttonbar (TC only recreaties the cache file if it's necessary).
If you'll do this vice versa you'll get ugly icons in 5.51.

It does this on multiple PC's. Yes, 5.5 & 6.01 installed on same PC - separate folders, with their own .ini's in each folder.

One thing I did notice: My icl icons have 16x16 & 24x24 formats only. TC appears to be trying to increase the 16x16 to 24x24 rather than use the 24x24. I found that if I put a 32x32 in the same icon, TC would then downsize the 32x32 to 24x24. TC 6.xx is apparently not coded to look for 24x24 icons. Simple as that.

Hi John!
 I watched the icons within your ICL: some are quite nice, but others don't already look very pretty. I quickly extracted one with XnView...
I didn't see any 24*24...? I saw 32*32 and other standard sizes.
The original sample:
1 Image: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/charries/relais/sample.ico
2 Image: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/charries/relais/soften.ico
:( I attempted to soften this icon #2, but the result isn't very good...
When reduced to 24*24, it's worse, of course.
 Like Lefteous says, there is a bug (and lacuna...) in the buttons setting.
Maybe could you try to set a bar from a quite "blank" setting, I mean having previously moved the bar-files into any "Save" sub-dir?
 In anyway, I guess that originals *.ico 24*24 might look better...
:) Best regards, friendly,
Clo

Clo,

If the icons look like that, then either 1) You're not on XP, or 2) whatever tool you're using does not support XP alpha transparency. The icons look beautiful in XP. You saw my screenshots.

I guess we'll have to wait for Christian to comment...
