packer plugin switcher

Post by *billiebub »

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before but it would be really handy to have a packer switcher when for example you hit Ctrl-Page Dn. This is handy in the case of having plugins who work on the same file extesion. As an example, an exe file, some packers will extract the content of a setup file and other will simply extract the resources. Is there a way around this?

I think it would be great just to have separate internal command to enter archive with packer choice dialog/menu.

And I think it was already discussed.

has there been a solution?

Post by *billiebub »

Has there been a solution to this or do people simply move up the plugin in the plugin list so that they can get it to work?

We need to face the fact that there are many plugins (packer, lister) that work on same extensions. I forexample also use the amazing ulister plugin to view different formats, but sometimes I prefer to use another plugin that provides other functions like the sumatrapdf. I don't find it convenient to keep switching the order of precedence for plugins. There has to be a suitable way around this.

In case of lister plugins you may press 4 again and again for switching plugins... But in case of packer plugins you may onlya associate or move lines up or down.

thanks for the lister tip. Although a packer switcher would be nice to have but I guess I'll have to stick to what I got for now.

How about "File->Internal association"?
Help wrote:Open Program used for the 'open' action. This is always the default verb (used when pressing ENTER) for internal associations.
...
**ext Use packer plugin defined for extension "ext" to view contents of file
E.g: Type name: *.exe *.rar

Actions: Open: **7z

In this case the 7z packer plugin will be used if you open a exe or rar file using the context menu "Open".

how is this going to solve the issue with having more than packer plugin act on the same extension? This will apply a packer plugin to certain extensions when using the open command but that's not what the issue is all about. Thanks for the tip though although I try to avoid the context menu as much as possible (it's slow), need for speed ;)

"<Shift+F10>,<Down><Enter>" is not really slower than opening a special dialog and selecting a packer plugin.

Ok, you have to define this for several extension, but on the other side if you know which extension can be opened by packer plugins this is no big deal.

The only (actual TC7.56a) missing thing is to assign several different packer plugins to different verbs.

I have to admit that I have never used the <Shift><F10> for the context menu simply because I try to stay in the world of TC without depending on explorer's shell extensions. That was very fast thanks for the tip. Hopefully there will be a time where TC will have a way to assign multiple packers to a single extension.

<Ctrl+PgDn>/<Enter> : the default packer plugin as usual
<Shift+F10> : select the packer plugin you want to use from context menu

you mean the "open with" Windows context menu? Ok. However this has nothing to do with TotalCommander, right?

I was referring to billiebubs feature suggestion, not the current state of affairs.

I mean this:

and that's a unique feature of TC.

ok, but does this allow to
assign multiple packers to a single extension
or just two, i.e.
<Ctrl+PgDn>/<Enter> : the default packer plugin as usual
<Shift+F10> : select the packer plugin you want to use from context menu
?

Actual only the two you have quoted.
But this was an request, wasn't it?
And the internal association was my suggestion how this could be done:
The only (actual TC7.56a) missing thing is to assign several different packer plugins to different verbs.
