[8.0b2 x32] Thread download: error downloading file

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

[8.0b2 x32] Thread download: error downloading file

Post by *wanderer »

A peculiar error message. OS is WinXP-SP3 x32. Here's some info on how to reproduce it:

INI SETTINGS:
AlwaysCopyInBackground=2

- Have two files on a folder.
- Select both and copy them to the other folder.
- Now, re-select both of them and press F5 to copy them to the other folder. The background manager (BM) window will open and you'll get an overwrite confirmation dialog. Press cancel in there. You'll notice that the first file has been removed from BM but the second one still exists and the BM remains open in PAUSED mode.
- Now, without closing the BM window, re-select both files and move them (F6).
- Press start in BM and answer "Overwrite All" in the confirmation dialog.

As soon as all the files are copied/moved, you get a "Thread download: error downloading file" message. All files seem to have been moved normally though.

Normally using latest TC on:
x32: WinXPx32 SP3 (very rarely nowadays).
x64: Clients/Servers - Win10/Win11 and Win2K16 to Win2K22, mainly Win10 though.

This isn't really a bug. The transfer manager counts all bugs it encounters, and then show a summary report at the end. Since the dialog was originally for downloads only, it reports a download errors (or x download errors if there were multiple).

First of all, why should this message appear? There wasn't a download error, there was just a user decision not to overwrite a file so IMO, TC should not have counter this as an error.

Second, the dialog is not informative at all. The message shown leads the user to assume that there was an error in the last file in the list. Perhaps a more generic message should appear (i.e. "Some of the files in the list were not successfully processed").

All aborted transfers are counted as a bug. Try aborting multiple of them, and the message should report the number.

Well, that's a design decision. I'm not sure i like it but it doesn't matter, it's you decision anyway. At least consider making the message more informative please.
