Help - Default directory for Compressed File unpacking

I am a total newbie to TC (but not to computers – anyone remember IBM 360 mainframes?).
I am having a bit of a problem getting to grips with TC’s modus operandi
Please excuse me if I am asking the “obvious” but is there any way of changing the default directory when doing a full compressed file unpack (Alt-F9)?
Irrespective of where I am in my disk system (2*HDDs, split into 4 partitions), it remains stubbornly as c:\.
I’ve tried looking in Help, trawled various configuration settings and had a cursory search against the English Forum, all to no avail.
I’ve even tried a Windows Unpacker (Stuffit Expander) by configuring it as an external Unpacker. This did unpack the files to a subdirectory of the directory in which the zip file was located but then screwed up trying to unpack any old files in the C:\ directory.
Am I missing something obvious or is this just how TC is intended to work?

• In brief:
¤ When you need to unpack an archive ZIP or other, you may open any dir. you want in the opposite pannel. For instance, you can create simply some dirs so-called A1 - A2 - etc. in which your files will be unpacked.
* Just select the archive, then ask for unpack in the way you prefer : menu "Files" or keyboard Alt+F9, button in the tool-bar...

• A pre-defined temp dir. is used only when you open an achive to watch its content, without unpacking it.
- For ZIP, you can set it in the Options >>> ZIP packer.
- For the others, the Windows /System default temp dir is used.
• In Options >>> Packers, be sure that "Treat archives like directories" is ticked. It's the best way to handle archives in TC...
