FTP speed issue

Post by *ThurahT »

Iam using tcmdr 6.02 on a win98se box. I have a high speed ADSL conneciton with 8 Mbit/s downstream but only 1 Mbit/s up. When downloading from a a FTP server with a 1000 Mbit/s connection I only download at 400 KB/s. Maximum. : ( The server is a linux box with no limitations. And I was actually the onlyone downloading at the moment. I always get 400 KB/s.. No matter what. 8Mbit/s = 1MB/s = 1024 KB/S... yes?

My NIC is a 100Mbit one. The HDD is really slow but it does at least 5 MB/s.
I have a firewall but I tested with and without it on. After reboot to. Its a statefull packetfilter. I have the proper rules for it. Both active FTP and pasv FTP. I connect to the server with pasv mode and there r no errors at all doing that and its speedy when crusing the DIRs. I had a friend over with a fancy Laptop using XP SP1 and he could download at 900KB/s... : ( Thats not 1024 KB/s but its at least faster than mine 400...

Anyone having a clue on this one?? Does anyone know if Win98 has some limitations on TCP/IP speed?? I cant belive it would...

TIA

How do other FTP clients perform?

TIA

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

Other FTP Clients....? What do u mean... ? :D

Actually I have not tested with any other.. I guess I could try with FlashFXP or something.. Do u belive that its a limitation/bug in Totalcmdr?

TIA again.

That's what we're trying to find out. If other clients perform poor, too, then it's not a TC issue.

I too am a newly registered user of TC. I've already used its FTP function to download updates for my virus program. It is as good as any FTP program I've tried and is most convenient when it's part of my file manager!

I've been using ws_ftp since late 1999 from www.ipswitch.com and have found over the years that my download speed has depended more on Internet conditions, rather than what software I've used. I enjoy trying out new software and some interfaces are more attractive than others, but the FTP protocol and the conditions of the net, at the time of your download, really rules in this case.
