Search Exclusions

Post by *Sticky »

Hi all! (New member) There's probably an obvious solution I'm just not seeing...but I couldn't find anything in help or the forums. Any help would be appreciated.

Is there a way that I can exclude certain directories from a search?
Some way to tell TC to SKIP (i.e. NEVER search) that directory while it's searching?

I have copy of CDDB on my P: partition. The first time I search for something on that drive (before it's in memory, or whatever TC does to make the subsequent searches speedy), it searches through every one of those files (60,000+). And, because the way the drive is mapped, it searches through them before searching hardly anything else :-(. This isn't a huge deal, but it does take several seconds (5400 rmp drive) to complete that part of the search--which gets annoying rather quickly.

The only workaround I've thought of so far would be to make a partition solely for those files, which would work...but be sort of bothersome.
Thanks for the help!

Hi, and welcome to our forum!

From TC's help file under "Search for" field:

-
New: Include/Exclude certain directories in the search.
Examples:
*.ini | windows\ finds all ini files except those in directories called "Windows" and their subdirs.
*.htm? | _vti*\ finds all html files, except in subdirs starting with _vti (used by Frontpage)
-

Christian (the author of TC) also said: "Currently TC only excludes directories relative to the current path, not absolute dirs or multiple levels deep."

I knew about | "blah"\ but it doesn't do quite what I want. Like several others in those links, I'm looking for a more permanent solution--not something that has to be messed with each time. The time it will take to enter an exclusion (or load an old search) is probably > (greater than or equal to) the search time for that dir. :-)

But thanks for the help!
I can't believe I couldn't find those threads on my own!
