Removable drives (not TC, but winXP related)

Post by *=m4rc= »

heLLo,

I got a general question about 'removable' drives under WinXP.

When we plug an 'USB flashdisk key' or so, window XP reconize it as a removable drive.
How could we force XP to set that particular drive to be reconized as a FIXED drive (like a normal Harddisk) ?
Under win9x it was possible in the hardware manager (a single checkbox), but in XP :roll:

Regards :wink:

The reason probably that worked on Win9x is because usually USB Flash memories require drivers to be installed under Win9x in order to be recognized. Since this is not necessary over WinXP and the flash is recognized upon inserting it you don't get to map it.

This is intentional though in the latter case since that's the idea behind a removable media after all!

It would have been the same over Win9x systems if the need for drivers didn't force the system to assign a drive letter.

There are though same rare exceptions that may allow the mapping over WinXP but so far I've seen it only on multi-card readers.

Maybe you could have a look to this website (in french), it explains how to mount a usb drive in a fixed folder in a ntfs partition :

:)  Bonjour, Hello...
• That looks like a "mount" under Linux... Right ?
{ OffTopic : I used ScanBin by J.C. Bellamy a while ago...
Unfortunately, impossible to use it under my Win 98 SE: it crashes systematically... Other : I've good friends @ Dijon. }

:mrgreen:   Kind regards, cordialement,
Claude
