Configuration > Option > Layout > Show Drive Combobox

Commands menu

Post by *Clo »

:) Hi !
Commands Menu >>> Volume label; from the help / Tutorial:

Code: Select all

Volume label...
Allows setting and changing the volume label of the drive shown in the source window.
The actual volume label is shown to the right of the drive selection box.
The volume label may contain up to 11 characters (NTFS: 32).
The following characters are NOT allowed:
? / | ¦ . , ; : + = < > [ ] ( ) & ^ * " \
:mrgreen:  Kind regards,

But the question might be - for which drives a label is being displayed. Surely for HDD. I also had label displayed for my USB CompactFlash reader. But not for CD or Virtual CDs. For mapped network drives (Novell) I get UNC path as a label, eg. "\\server1\vol1\Data"

Hi again,
• You can't give a name to a network-drive, it seems to be a Windows restriction; to see that, you can type LABEL on the command-line; you will get a DOS message telling this...
• CD-Roms are read-only, hence it's impossible to write a label-name in the disk. But you can define them via TC adding the <wincmd.ini> section:

Code: Select all

[DriveHints]
D=CD-Rom
E=Burner
F=zip-drive
....
* I don't know for virtual CDs, but I guess that might work too...

2Clo,
Cheers, I am not a junior member anymore :!: See my status! I am proud to be a full member of TC forum! :mrgreen: . Have a beer with me!

Now going back to topic - yes labels for network drives cannot be changed. And shown UNC path for mapped drive is an excellen feature! I use it very often to know what is mapped in the system, especially when I have to deal with various computers.
For CD-Roms, thanks for that info - it was mentioned on forum in other thread, but I could not find it.
This will show a description of drive rather then inserted CD.
But let it be this way so that TC does not scan all inserted CDs to read the label.
But maybe there could be an option to make TC read the CDs label for SELECTED CD drives only - (I could set it to ON for virtual drives)
eg. ReadLabelsForCDDrives: MN - for M: and N: drives.
But we should discuss it in that thread about Virtual CD labels.

• I know who you're! But it's useful to indicate (over and over again) these Win features for all (new) users reading that thread too ...  :P .
But maybe there could be an option to make TC read the CDs label for SELECTED CD drives only - (I could set it to ON for virtual drives)
eg. ReadLabelsForCDDrives: MN - for M: and N: drives.
• Good idea. To add within the Author's wish-list...
But we should discuss it in that thread about Virtual CD labels.
• My son has such virtual CD-drives in his PCs, I'll ask for test to him...

2Clo,
But you have completly misunderstood. I do not mean "why you write this to me , I already know" - NO no no. It's good you have written it. Actually I did not know exactly how to add it to wincmd.ini and did not have the time to find it.
What I meant was - It is a verry happy day for me because I have just become a member (I have been promoted just today). That's why I wanted to share my joy with you! Sorry, I was'n clear enough. But if you see my status now - it no longer says "junior member" but "member"! :)
So let's forget this misunderstanding and have a drink :!:
Cheers! :mrgreen:
PS. sorry for being off-topic, but it is really important.

Congratulations IGL for the "full [face=comicsansms]member[/face]"

Clo says "I don't know for virtual CDs, but I guess that might work too... "

On my PC It works ok also with Virtual CDs (Alcohol and Deamon I tried both)

:oops:   OOPS!
• Sorry, I didn't take care in first, but I saw that later in another thread of yours...
:P   Congratulations for getting "Member" Status !

• The [DriveHints] section can be added in <wincmd.ini> at any location, i.e. following the actual last one.
* It doesn't exist by default, I guess that all possible sections might be already written, even remaining empty, like that is done in the <system.ini> file of Window$...

Greeting to all! I have happy day today.
Yes I agree that it would be best if there were all sections and enry as empty, eg:
[section]
SomeValue=
OtherNormallyUnused=
That could suggest there is such an option and user may want to discover what it is. ;) It would make it easier to add such values without checking in which section it should be.

I added some codes in the <wincmd.ini>
C=Serve
D=Files
E=Tools

but after I click the icon of CM_OpenDrivers in the button bar,
I only saw the list of drivers in the windows, still couldn't see any volume label beside the name of drivers.

Confusions---

Post by *Clo »

:)   Hi !
• The section [DriveHints] makes customized info-balloons !
• That allows you to recognize a certain CD-Drive among several ones.
cm_OpenDrives displays a list of all drives in the PC, but these info-balloons are not available here.
• Unfortunately, you even can't set them as comments (Ctrl+Z), this is not supported.
:!:  Warning : please, take care to write correctly DRIVE, and not Driver - which is a software to set any device -; this is wrong and quite confusing.

:mrgreen:  Kind regards,
Claude

Oh, I see!

I hope next TC version has this function. same as the left panel of windows explorer:
My computer
+ label(C:)
+ label(D:)
+ label(E:)

Because you know, The capability of Hard Disk has been increasing,
One PC maybe has many drivers(C、D、E......X). It's very useful if we can directly see the volume name of drivers in the windows.
