File system plugin for database access
Hello everybody,
Please, try new file-system plugin.
http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/ado_ds.html
It gives you access to the objects of server-based and local databases that can be connected using Microsoft ADO technology: OLE DB providers (MS SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, Sybase, InterBase, MySQL, MS Access...) and ODBC drivers (Paradox, dBase, FoxPro, Excel, CSV...).
This plugin enhanced functionality of author's previous plugin - MS SQL Servers.
I'm waiting for your responses.

I tried the plugin with Oracle ODBC. On native ADO level it didn't work fine
guess, the problem was with ADO itself.
Now tell me (because you use it with MsSql), what is the advantage of the plugin over a native application like TOAD? The query window is very basic, and having the list of objects in TC is nice, but why have it there?
No offence, just curious.

I switched to Linux, bye and thanks for all the fish!
Hi.
I tested this on MsSQL - works great.
I don't know why I can't use it on Oracle and 'Microsoft OLE DB provider for Oracle'. I can log in. I can enter to 'Stored Procedure' folder. I can run queries. But I can't see any tables and views.
Using 'OLE DB for ODBC' with ODBC driver from Oracle everything works fine.
Great plug-in!
Regards

Did you try to use native Oracle OLE DB provider? Using it I have access to tables and views. But I can't see their definitions.brzozow wrote: I don't know why I can't use it on Oracle and 'Microsoft OLE DB provider for Oracle'. I can log in. I can enter to 'Stored Procedure' folder. In EM I have object tree, each its branch opens slowly. Plugin opens its folders quiclier.
I can see table data in EM, but for sorting or filtering I have to change SQL text directly and then execute it. In plugin's Query Viewer I do it in several mouse clicks.
I have no access to query history in EM, can't store table layout for next using, can't work with BLOB fields.
When I need to generate CREATE TABLE script for any table, I wait 2-5 times longer, then using F3 in the plugin, and I get practically the same information.
If I need to see tables from several different databases (and I really need it!!!) I have to open EM, Access, Paradox. And I can do it just from TC.
I can use MS Query Analizer to access MS SQL Server, it solves some of above problems (but not all of them) and adds new ones.
During testing my plugin with another databases (Oracle, Sybase, DB2, etc.) I worked with their native control centers, and sometimes I had similar problems. It's not because I am too clever. Those tools have a lot of additional features that my plugin doesn't have. It's a reason why they are so hulking.
My plugin is not good tool if you need to build and debug views or SPs, or if you want to administer your server, manage privelegies etc.
It's good for another tasks.
I don't know what is TOAD, so I'll write about MS SQL Enterprise Manager. Now tell me (because you use it with MsSql), what is the advantage of the plugin over a native application like TOAD? The query window is very basic, and having the list of objects in TC is nice, but why have it there?

I'm using this plug-in with Oracle. TOAD is much better but TOAD is expensive. I'm not DBA. I just want to see DB structure and data. Additionally I'm working with few databases at once (SQL and ORACLE). Using this plug-in I don't have to run few separate programs (Query Analyzer for MsSQL and TOAD for Oracle)SanskritFritz wrote:Now tell me (because you use it with MsSql), what is the advantage of the plugin over a native application like TOAD?

Could you give me link to free version of TOAD - I'd like to see on its interface and organization. Maybe I'll find some ideas for future versions.

Sorry for my ignorance, what is Teradata?
Could you give me links to that DB and to OLE DB provider for it (or ODBC driver)

Free TOAD: http://www.toadsoft.com/downld.html
2OlegY :
Teradata is a super database for datawarehousing. It supports billions of records and, of course, only very large corporations can afford it. For these guys, Oracle, Informix, Sybase, etc, are just toys. The link is :

About the ODBC driver, sorry, like many expensive things, they are extremely hard to get them for free, here at my company, we get it as part of our regular software. But unfortunately I couldn't find how you could get it for free.

Memo to Boss : No TC, No Work
I just try Oracle OLE DB provider. It works fine but I can't see DB structure (table/SP). But this is provider fault.OlegY wrote: Did you try to use native Oracle OLE DB provider? Using it I have access to tables and views. But I can't see their definitions.
I can see DB structrue with 'OLE DB for ODBC'.
