Search (Alt+F7) in archives, results Feed to listbox, copy

Post by *Diam0nd »

Hey there, guys! I have a situation at hand and I'm trying to understand whether TC can handle it proper or it might be a feature request/suggestion.
So, I'm searching for a certain pattern (e.g. *rsa*) in a few archive files (66 files) and I would like to copy some files from those search results, which would be spread in several archives.
Here's what I would like to do in TC:
1. Alt+F7
2. Search for: *rsa*
3. Mark "Search archives (all except for UC2)"
4. Enter
5. See results (e.g. 995 files in 66 archives)
6. Feed to listbox
7. Mark SOME of those files (e.g. mark 10 files with a space)
8. F5
9. Files get copied into one place/directory

Here's what actually happens:
When I get to #6 and press "Feed to listbox", I see NOT the 995 results that were displayed in #5, but just the 66 archive files (inside of which the search was actually made). Meaning I can't mark the archives I need, and then easily copy them.

Is this functionality not supported by TC at the moment?

So what I have to do now when I want to search in archives is at #5 click on each file I need, TC takes me into that archive to that file's location, then I copy the file. This is OK if you have a few files to copy, but if you need to do 20, then this process is totally turns into overkill. So I was wondering either I'm doing something wrong or maybe I missed a piece of important information to make it work.

Any ideas, guys? :(

I'm afraid you can't. However you can do the following:
1. Search *rsa* in archives.
2. Feed to listbox. TC will only feed archives that contain desired files.
3. Select archives and press Alt+F9, then filter files to unpack *rsa*.

Thanks so much for your kind answer! :)
Sucks that there's no proper solution other than a workaround, but ohh well.

By any chance, do you happen to know why wasn't this feature implemented yet?
I mean, using my example, if I click on ANY of the 995 results, TC takes me exactly to each of the files in any of those 66 archives (where search was made). Meaning the information about the path to each file (=which file stored in which archive) is already there (=TC "knows" where each file is), so what's stopping TC of having this feature for search in archives in exactly the same way "Feed to listbox" works now for non-archives?

The only difference I see between how Feed to listbox works for non-archives and archives is that:
- Non-archives (normal files, not packed): TC uses normal paths (e.g. C:\Temp\SomeFile.doc)
- Archives (files packed into an archive): TC needs to use paths in archives (e.g. C:\Temp\SomeArchive.zip\SomeFile.doc)

In any case, strange that this Feed to listbox thing doesn't work for archives, because I really am using it on a daily basis and as of now I'm in a world of pain, because when it comes to archives I really need to do everything manually :(

You can find some related topics using keywords archive feed, e.g.:

http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=35974&highlight=archives+feed

I think your task is really would be solved much easier if TC could extract specific files from search results.

Not sure what the status was in 2013, but when I say for example, search all archives for "PlugInst.inf" I find many download plugins.
For later: already copy your file mask "Pluginst.inf" to your clipboard.

When I feed results to listbox, I only get the zip files not the results I just found in the results box.
Create and go into a temperate folder in the opposite panel, go back to the search results (the list of zip files),
Select All, Alt+F9 (unpack), enter "Pluginst.inf" into "Files to unpack" field, check "unpack each archive into separate folder" -> all files are unpacked.
Now you can use branch view or find, feed to listbox to find these files again and do what you want / need to do (move, copy, rename etc)

Still additional work but at least not "one by one".

Edit: I would support feed to listbox the actual search results so zip/foundfile.ext
