Problems writing to CD-RW and DVD+RW

Post by *aslaksen »

Hi guys,

I'm running XP on a Dell Inspiron notebook with a NEC DVD+RW. The drive works fine, I can use Roxio Drag to Disc to burn no problem. I can also read disks fine under TC. But most of the time when I try to copy to the drive using F5 in TC, it hangs badly. It looks like it starts copying, and sometimes goes up to a few %, but then it starts making a lot of sound and just seems to spin. I've tried both with Roxio and Sonic software. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I experience no problems with InCD by Ahead the developer of Nero for packer writing on CD-RWs (supports DVD-RWs also). I'm using the latest TC version on WinXP Pro SP1. I have no experience with Roxio's implementation. Try InCD to check if it is a software related problem. What Win version and TC version are you using?

Thanks for your suggestion about trying InCD. I'm a bit reluctant to do it, though, since these packet writing programs tend to be excluse. I guess I'll have to uninstall one before trying another. And if I use Roxio by itself, there are no problems. It's only when I use TC.

I use the latest TC and Win.

Exactly. You will probably have to uninstall Roxio first. I'm not sure though if it is vital to uninstall the core program itself. Maybe just the Drag to Disc will do. Then proceed with just the InCD installation. That is if none of those software is using its partnering application to function. You better check the corresponding manuals or post a question on the individual forums or wait here for an answer from someone that do use Roxio.

aslaksen,
You have to use Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V to copy files to RWs; there's a bug in XP preventing the proper function of F5 (standard copy).
You can set an option to use this setting for all drives in Configuration - Options - Copy/Delete - Use copy+paste via Explorer, but that disables the automatic copying of comments in descript.ion files.
And maybe the compatibility options would work, too, however, I am not convinced of that.

Hi Roman,

Thanks a lot! It works!

I had seen the item about using explorer to copy in the faq, but I hadn't tried it, because I was able to copy sometimes.

Not with InCD. F5 works fine on XP over InCD. 8)

Well, maybe there's some workaround in InCD, but Christian said something about the MS programmers forgetting about some functions. Can't find the exact thread right now (maybe it was even in the old forum), but at least something:

That wasn't about InCD, that was about XP built-in burning support.[/face]

What wasn't about InCD and was about XP built-in burning support?

If it is a Windows XP (build-in burning support) related bug maybe it is present with Roxio if the latter one is using XP's burning-related resources to function while InCD is probably independent hence the lack of the problem. Just a speculation! ;)

Black Dog,
Are you sure? Can you post a link to that thread? (Or quote it as a whole and send it to me by mail? :) ) Because I still think it had to do with direct copying to RWs. I might be wrong, though, as under XP built-in support I understand the selection and adding of different files to a virtual "dir" from which they are then burnt as a whole. As I say, I might be wrong, I haven't burned using XP's built-in support yet.

TIA

OK, to make it clear, Microsoft forgot to support the Win32 API functions for copying to CD, namely
- CopyFile/CopyFileEx
- WriteFile

These functions just return errors when trying to write to CD. Therefore burning only works in Explorer, or when using Explorer methods to copy (Copy+Paste).

InCD and DirectCD do support these functions, therefore you can write to CD-RW not only in Explorer, but also in Word, Excel and also in Total Commander.
