Randomly, pressing Ctrl-D to invoke directory hotlist will cause TC to close immediately. No error message is given. But it is not a 'normal termination', e.g. the current state is not saved and restored when I run TC again. This is not a permanent problem, I'm using ^D very often and TC crashes say once a day, but clearly there's something wrong.
The same issue on my work and home PC (both on Win7pro), so not a single PC problem. Also had this problem on older versions (8.51 at least)

Hmm, no idea what this could be. Do you have any extremely long paths in the hotlist?

No, the longest path is 25 characters only. I'd like to document the problem more precisely, but there's nothing to demonstrate it on, no error message etc.ghisler(Author) wrote:Hmm, no idea what this could be. Do you have any extremely long paths in the hotlist?
Some notes:
- My ^D hotlist has no more than 20 items typically
- TC crashes immediately after pressing ^D, not AFTER making a hotlist selection.
- I don't use mouse in TC much so I can't say if the problem is only with the ^D hotkey press... But no other action invoked by a hotkey in TC has a problem
- My paths in the hotlist are mostly local hard disk folders (not USB external disk), only 2 are network folders. I can try and delete these temporarily and let you know if it helps. I think NO, I have used network folders in the hotlist for years (on XP and 32bit TC)
- The crash never happens short after TC (re-)start, it takes some time typically hours to occur, i.e. 1-2 crashes per day. Might be due to some variable/list overflow - only speculating here.
- I think the problem occurred first when I installed the 64bit version of TC. Should I install a 32bit TC to test the issue?
Many thanks for TotalCmdr/WinCmdr - really handy tool

Unfortunately there is nothing I could check to resolve your problem. No one else seems to have this problem, so it must be something specific to your system. Maybe Ctrl+D triggers a script which sends Alt+F4 to TC (just a guess). Try opening the list by clicking on the "*" button for a while to check whether that triggers it too...

Ive been having this exact same problem on both 64 and 32 bit versions 8.52. It happens on both my work and home PC. I never use the ctrl-D trigger but it happens if I either click the hotlist asterisk or the history arrow next to it.
I still keep an old 8.01 version and it doesnt happen on that one. One thing ive noticed is the newer versions the color of that asterisk and arrow use non standard colors. I run high contrast desktop theme and usually its green but the newer version its black:

Ive got a hunch that it might have something to do with shell extensions.
I have both tortoise git and svn installed along with copy path extension.
In VMs that I run I never have it crash and they dont have these installed.

Ctrl+D / Asterisk button creates a standard Windows popup menu, not a custom window. Once the popup menu has been created, it is handled entirely by Windows - there is no custom drawing in this menu like in the main menus.
I have tortoise installed here too, no problem. I don't see how this could interfere with a standard menu either.

With regards to the VMs some are in high contrast and some are not.
They are probably not a good example since I reboot them often and dont really poke around in TC as much as I do with my regular desktop.
What about the hotlist/history buttons themselves? Why are they not observing the desktop colors? That is a bug in of itself IMO.
As I was just typing up this response I just tried clicking the "commands" menu and TC disappeared like it does when clicking the hotlist or history. That is the first time Ive ever seen it do that. This is on 64 bit win7 and 64bit TC.
