Getting the TC 603a installer on to a 3½" floppy

Post by *DRP535 »

I frequently have to visit n00balicious friends & family to sort their computers out for them and it's not always guaranteed that they use TC which I find rather annoying because I'm absolutely addicted to it in the worst possible way!! :-)

I depend so heavily on TC in fact that I'm basically a cripple when faced with a computer without it ;-) Rather than learn how to use a computer with the archaic and pathetic suite of tools provided in the standard Winblows install I had taken to carrying around with me a floppy disc with the TC installer on it so I could quickly install the shareware version of the program wherever and whenever needed.

Unfortunately with v603a I now find the installer size has crept over the majik 1,457,664 byte number. Anyone know a way of getting the TC installer back onto a single floppy again? I've tried RAR & ZIP SFXes but without success. Unfortunately they also need to be SFX because the same computers that don't have TC also more than likely don't have RAR or ZIP either.

Any ideas?

Extract the contents of the SFX archive and copy these files to a floppy disk.

Less languages ?

Post by *Clo »

:) Hello !
• You could try to prepar a diskette with less language-files, i.e. only the language you need…

* Just a thought.
- Indeed, the best way is to use an USB-stick, though unfortunately it doesn't work with some old PCs.
- Otherwise, you coul split the SFX archive in two parts (2 diskettes), then join the parts in an empty dir. with the Win command line:

Code: Select all

copy /b part.001+part.002 tcmd603a.exe
Please, give a look in the Help >>> Split / Combine files (Files Menu)

Claude

I would like to do this. How do I delete all the useless (to me) languages from within the LANGUAGE directory inside the CAB file inside the SFX installer?

Delete all files of directory Language except the language you need

help files can be deleted
HISTORY.TXT
KEYBOARD.TXT
REGISTER.WRI
TOTALCMD.HLP

Copy this all other files to
A:\TOTALCMD\
A:\TOTALCMD\LANGUAGE\

Don't forget your registry key: wincmd.key (located in A:\TOTALCMD\)

Make a batch file TC_START.BAT in A:\ with this line

Code: Select all

@START .\TOTALCMD\TOTALCMD.EXE /I=.\WINCMD.INI  /F=.\WCX_FTP.INI
Thanks for this but I'd actually rather leave it installed on the computer I fix up. That way it will (hopefully) still be there when I have to go back in 2 weeks to clean all the viruses and spyware off again!

I also don't need the registration key file because I just leave it unregistered on the host computer.

Thats's exactly the problem with the suggestions by clo and leftous. You'd need an archiver that is able to read and write cab-files.
If you have one than the task is easy - extract all files form the cab, delete the unnecessary files and re-compress the rest and, finally, add the cab to the sfx.

However, why do you not realise the suggestion by norfie? IMHO that's a very good way to solve your problem.

Can anyone make me or tell me how to make an 'Install.cab' file like the one inside the installer SFX *without* all the additional languages other than English?

If I could somehow get a copy of an English-only version of this Install.cab file, that would be perfect.

Cheers.

- simply open the CAB (2-click or ENTER) Then open the Language dir, same way, select the files you don't need (1 click on each keeping CTRL pressed) >> Del key.
Indeed, the useless *.lng and *.mnu files …

Hey!

You wrote : but I'd actually rather leave it installed on the computer I fix up. But thats no problem at all with norfies method - just copy the contents of the diskette to any directory on the harddisk. Should work this way if you start TC with the batchfile.

No, Clo, thats not correct.
If I try that with my TC I get the message "Function not supported" (translation from german, hm).

TC itself can extract and read inside CAB files so the suggestion by lefteous is a good one and works, but ideally if I could get rid of the unnecessary languages as suggested by clo then that would be even better. I just need to find a way to rewrite the CAB file after I've got rid of all the other language files.

Any chance of you making an English-only CAB file for me Christian??

Please??

Hi !
 Right, TC doesn't support that, I forgot; but yet, I requested this support to the Author, unsuccessfully…Only open the CABs currently. But I've a workaround...
Please, see below ;)
2DRP535
- I can do that handling with a small third-party program aCAB
- I open the SFX >>> move the install.cab >>> suppress the useless files inside using aCAB >>> copy the modified CAB in the SFX.
I tested, it works.
:( Unfortunately for you, the program is in French only…
I guess that you might try the split solution too…

Okay I've managed to find a way to rewrite the CAB file now so that's cool, just one more question, why isn't there a Wcmd_eng.lng file inside that Install.cab file?

I've deleted everything inside the language directory inside the CAB file except for Wcmd_eng.mnu. Is that correct if I just want an English-only version?

- The English language is embedded in the EXE. It's the default language.
It's mandatory to keep the Wcmd_eng.mnu, but you can add handy items inside later (customize it)
However, a stand-alone English.lng file exists too, I've it (not released in normal archives)
