Check out Google Desktop
Works very good, Now I don't have to use multiple search applciations for word files, email, chat and files names.
But the Index files are huge (100 MB for a 30 GB HDD).

I have tested Google desktop search too and I have to say I cannot recommend it in its current state.
1) The indexing works very slow. Is there index even when the system is not on idle state?
2) The system integration is terrible. It's not running as a service. If I want to run it as a restricted user it tells that I have to start it as the user that installed the program.
3) Browser interface. I don't want to use my web browser to search for files. I want to use Total Commander. Is there an API?
