new version alert mailinglist or by thread notification
I am on the mailinglist, but would it be doable to make an new Topic for new releases of Total Commander so people can click on "Watch this Topic for replies" so they get a notification when a new version is released?
Currently Opera (www.opera.com) is using this method.

Unfortunately this wouldn't resolve the problem: How to send 35'000 mails quickly. I'm not a spammer, so I send out these mails distributed over 4 days. Perhaps someone has a better idea?
Btw, fileforum.betanews.com offers such a notification system when they update the software.

Hmm, I considered this too - but the low bandwidth thing just isn't true. With TC updates only about twice a year, the bandwidth for one mailing is many thousands of times lower than for an RSS feed which is checked hourly by many RSS readers...The better idea is called "RSS feed". Smile
Very convenient, low bandwidth usage.

People using RSS feeds are usually visiting the corresponding forum or website only when there are interesting threads to click on. A thread feed eats only some bytes per message, a page load eats 1000 times as much.
An RSS feed with the sole purpose to serve as an update reminder is of course bad when the updates are extremely rare, that's why I explained what features it should offer in general to lower bandwidth usage.
But, as the updates are so rare you should really fire the email notifications out as fast as you can because otherwise the whole service is pointless. A news being delivered four days later in of no use.

It would be nice if this were true. First, RSS uses XML, which is a way to write tons of data to say almost nothing - very uneconomical. Second, many RSS readers don't allow to set the update interval individually per feed. I have read that many big news sites have a problem similar to a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack every full hour, when many thousands of RSS readers retrieve the new XML page almost at the same time...People using RSS feeds are usually visiting the corresponding forum or website only when there are interesting threads to click on. The point is that the actual content of these little feeds is limited to some words per line. It is used as an overview of current threads and this is extremely economical in opposite to the forum start page which contains a lot of bloat, formatting tags and stuff like that and it has always to be reloaded, too, to reflect the recent changes, absolutely not needed in feeds. Even if those are set to an update interval of five minutes it doesn't produce as much bandwidth per hour as one SINGLE reload of your website.
Before you haven't tried it yourself it's all pure theory, just the same with the disabled personal messages.

Weird thing. I read all the posting here and well, many other forums and sites which are far more frequented than this one, have a RSS feeding: Yahoo! Groups, Download.com, Space.com, DeviantART, EMforum.nl, to name a few.Sir_SiLvA wrote:Was already requested and as new tc versions only apears 2 times a yearVillampiro wrote:What about an RSS feed for the channels in this very forum? It would be very useful to have a peek at the newest postings in the subscribed channels.
the answer was No

I haven't yet added any RSS feed because I fear that it will be a major performance problem. Does anyone have experience with RSS feeds and forums here?

I'm running a phpBB forum with a rss feed on it. It goes without problems.
I recently found another feed, the currently installed one has a problem with authentication. It is not able to handle the non-public forums (which are only accessible for logged-in users) and shows them to the whole public. Even worse, real private forums which are only accessible for certain users aren't shown at all.
The new one uses real authentication, I tested it today in feedreader with success
Check it out at http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=254606
