How about an icon competition? & icon copyrights

Nice icons indeed! Are they all your own work?

What do you think about a design competition? Now after the release would be a good time. The problem with a competition would be to ensure that people don't simply copy other people's ideas...

Yes, I built the buttonbar icons pixel by pixel by myself (except the Landscape in the icon for 'cm_SrcCustomView_images' which I took from a free icon I found somewhere in the net and modified it).
The Drive icons I used for 'cm_GotoPrevious/NextDrive' are taken from the default WindowsXP DLLs and the Drivelib.dll is the one from Lefteous (which seems to be based on the XP icons, too), where I just modified the FTP connection icon.
I'm not sure if using captured WinXP Icons in a commercial software could raise some copyright issues, but I'm willing to design my own drive icons anyway, so that will be no problem.
But if using them would be legal, I'd like to keep them, because they look quite nice IMHO. Maybe anyone knows a bit more about copyrights in this case?
So except for the drive icons I can declare all icons in my collection as my work and I would be honored if they would be integrated into this great and outstanding Software.
or simply a poll could be made if anyone's against the usage of my collection
Hm, I'm happily emberrassed that so many users and even you like my creationNice icons indeed! Are they all your own work?

Hm, that could be a problem indeed, maybe a thread/poll about possible candidates could be started to choose the final contestants. The problem with a competition would be to ensure that people don't simply copy other people's ideas...

Are you sure a whole competition is necessary ? This is indeed a very nice and worked-out set of icons. If you like them too, and decide to implement the set in the next ver of TC, it's fine by me.
Instead of a competition, it could be an option to give people time to comment on certain specific icons, to fine-tune them, before final implementation and release.
An example : The icon for viewing colored thumbnails contains four blue rectangles. It would be more meaningful if these rectangles had 4 different colors, relating to the actual output most of the time.

Well, you know our opinion on the issue. We are just waiting for you to initiate the competition!

Are you forgetting the professional icon designers? They work by the book!
PS: This discussion is becoming OT. Sorry StickyNomad...

But if the colored Icon is preferred by many users, I'll change it. I'm willing to fine-tune my icons anyway, and suggestions are always welcome!
BTW, anyone who's interested, can find my icons in this this thread
Thanks for this suggestion! Actually I created this icon in 4 different colors the first time, but for me it seemed a little bit too colorful. See this example. But that's my personal taste, I finally inserted the icon with white rectangles, which I prefer. An example : The icon for viewing colored thumbnails contains four blue rectangles. It would be more meaningful if these rectangles had 4 different colors, relating to the actual output most of the time.

Then it would also be nice if TC would store on close which .bar was displayed when closing...franck8244 wrote:If such nice icons are provided in a next TC release, it would be great to have in "default.bar" buttons calling others predefined bar (Config.bar, View.bar, Display.bar, etc...).

btw why do we need a competition?
I dont see any selfmade Iconset that looks as nice as StickyNomad's so who's for StickyNomad's Icons becoming TC standard?
*me lifts hand*
@Frank: why execpt D&D? imho the biggest ButtonBar-Prob is D&D as you cant drag more than one Item on a ToolBar Icon
ie if you want to to open some textfiles with your editor at once...

Of course the example is too colorful with those 4 basic colors. In practice this will not occur with a dir of pictures.
A collection of photographs of forest scenes would give a main 'greenish' impression. So variations of 1 color would be more appropriate (fine-tune : meaning for 3 of the 4 rectangles, the fourth being the occasional exception with another base color, like a close-up of something).
Offtopic : Imho drag and drop techniques are awful and a typical M$ derivate. I avoid it as hell, it's an unsafe action.

How about an icon like the following for the colored thumbnails?
32x32 256 colors | 16x16 256 colors | Icon file
I edited the icon in vicons2_buttonbar.icl, adding the RGB stripes, while keeping the 3D shading for the 256 color icons.

for files other than pictures you can use rapidshare (http://rapidshare.com)...Villampiro wrote:_buttonbar.icl, adding the RGB stripes. Sorry, but at present ImageShack cannot host ICO files. If you like it, I can mail you the finished file.
