TC as comfortable Image Viewer

Post by *Lesmo16 »

TotalCommander since version 6.5 can be used as a fine viewer for DigiCam images.
On the left pane the preview image files are displayed in ThumbnailView, and on the right panel the actual image is displayed in QuickView.

Here you can find an according screenshot of my TC - Image: http://img111.exs.cx/img111/8493/tcalsfotoviewer2rq.jpg

Works quite nice, but the main disadvantage of this "TCViewerMode" is the slow ThumbnailView!

A first step for a possible solution was made by Christian Ghisler in this thread.

If you would read from page 3 on, you can find some background information and his following 2 quotes from page 4.
ghisler(Author) wrote:Hmm, sounds to me like cPicture is using the preview images which some digicams create and store inside of the .jpg files. This is extremely fast, but many image editors do not update these preview files when you edit the main image, so the preview images may not actually show what the main image contains...
ghisler(Author) wrote:... Maybe someone with some free time can modify my jpegthumbs plugin combined with my exif plugin to implement such a thumbnail extractor.
So this plugin could be absolutely great: 8)
if it would only display the embedded previews - that would make ThumbnailView incredibly fast,
and if it would show these previews according to the EXIF orientation flag - that would even show all thumbs in the right orientation!

Thanks in advance @all plugin developers! :)

IMHO XnView extracting thumbnails 10x faster and passing them directly to TC will be sufficient, once the new XnView is released.

How should the shown scenario be managed with xnView?
xnView as thumbs viewer on the left, and as preview viewer on the right - is that possible?

XnView for extracting thumbnails (can be set in Configuration - Optoins - Thumbnails - Get from Irfan/XnView for:) and XnView as a Lister viewer on the right. :)

Many programs can do this... general purpose viewers like XnView, IrfanView, plugins like Imagine, SGViewer... There are also UniView and SlowView (general viewers) and one more plugin whose name I can't think of right now, IIRC.

left: <Ctrl+Shift+F1> + set Hacker's explanation in TC
right: <Ctrl+Q> + set Tools - Options - View - "Fit image to window, large only" in xnView

That should be enough - otherwise you've to buy gallons of beer and invite us to manage this at your home.

Hmm, I've looked at your screenshot ...

You've to do something additional:

1. Open TC
2. go to menu entry "Configuration"
3. select "Options"
4. select "Edit/View"
5. press "Configure internal viewer"
6. in section "Multimedia display" set a hook at "Use IrfanView/xnView to load graphics other than BMP"
7. Browse to your path of xnView
8. press OK

Now you should have the highlighted thumb as image in the opposite pane

BTW: you should avoid using characters like - od = for files/folders

You have to configure XnView for the Lister, too. Open Lister (F3) - Options - Configure - Use IrfanView/XnView to load graphics other than BMP -> set the path there. Also check the checkbox Load bitmaps as graphics at startup.

@Xtrician:
Wow, that's fine! :)

Not that we don't trust you - but just to be proof - please show us an image of your TC working the right way!
And with different thumbs please - perhaps Hacker likes it blonde ...
