Xplorer² user considering switching to TC

Post by *JPCoetzee »

I've been using Xplorer² for about 15 years but thinking about switching. TC has several advantages, the biggest being the ability to use my Google Drive (almost) like a local folder. However TC lacks in a few areas compared to Xplorer² and I'd like your thoughts.

1. Cannot sort files and folders by date in MIXED mode.
This is important to my work. I want the folder display to be sorted in date/time order, with files and folders mixed together. I can't do that with TC.

2. No text labels underneath toolbar icons.
I like to create toolbar icons for certain actions, for example single-click favourite directories. It is a huge help to have a text label beneath the icon, for example the target directory of the shortcut. I can't do that with TC.

TC also has the following annoyance.
1. Big tab bar at the bottom (F1, F2, etc).
This is very useful to me as a newbie but the text in the buttons doesn't reflect my tweaked key mappings.

Are there any plans to introduce any of these features?

many thanks

1. No plan
2. There are tooltips if the cursor is over a button.
This has the information and doesn't waste screen space.
3. You can have multiline toolbars which can replace the function keys.

Thanks for your swift reply. That's a shame (for me).

OK, when sorting by time order is it possible to display the files ABOVE the directories?

It takes a few seconds more though :)

But not with the function description inside the big button (e.g. "F5 Copy").

Hi JPCoetzee,

Nope, but you could hide all directories in the view (temporarily).

No, but you can hide the directories.

It takes a few seconds more though
You can adjust the delay with the ToolTipDelay parameter in your wincmd.ini file - the default is 500 (milliseconds).

Is there a hotkey to toggle that view?

The easiest is to define one yourself.
// you can use extended english menu command user command : em_ext_hide_folders

You can define a user command yourself when you define the hotkey.
Preferences->Configuration->Misc. Define the key and add or select a command.

Code: Select all

name: em_Folder-Only
command: CD *|*\
icon: wwcmicons.dll,13

2. I'm not familiar with Xyplorer - where does it show labels underneath toolbar icons? Does it just make the buttons really huge?

Yes, underneath the icons.
Its optional and I guess almost no one will use this option.
The picture in the icons are made smaller and the buttons are large.
Tried it once and will never enable this option again.
Tooltips is a much better way to explain buttons.

You can change the texts there. I did it on mine.

Create a text file in the LANGUAGE directory.
Try adding this to the file:

Code: Select all

English
1074="F5 Refresh"

Save it and go to TC.
Configuration>Options>Language
select your file and click OK.

If I'm not mistaken, the labels for those buttons range from 1072 to 1078.

Not tested, but this post says something different here: Customize bottom buttons.

It says you can't assign functions to the buttons
but if you change the button text and assign the desired function to this Fkey it should work.
This is all static then of course.

That sounds a bit confusing! So I can reassign F7, and edit the text on the button to reflect the change, but if I click the button it will still create a new directory.

Well, you can still hide the buttons. At least it wouldn't be confusing...
