Another Event Log plugin

Post by *VadiMGP »

Because I spend a lot of time to analyzing backups of event logs files (.evt) I decided to write 2 plugins to view such files. FS-plugin represent Event Logs as .evt files (with abillity to copy and clear) while LS-plugin show .evt files (both backup and currenty used by system). LS-plugin shows at the same time all events with descriptions, allows sort and filter.

Both plugins can be downloaded here.

Works fine as an admin - especially the lister plugin is very nice. However, it does NOT work as a normal user, while the "NT events" plugin on our addons page does work in this case. Any ideas why? Could you change this? Maybe you need to ask the author of the other plugin for help.

Does the viewer work with WinNT?
I can't add it with the configuration dialog "LS-plugins" - I get the info:
Error loading plugin file!
The plugiprobably neeedssome DLLs missing on your system.
And even I add it manually it doesn't format the viewing .evt files.

Sorry, I didn't thought normal user (not admin) will work with event log. :). My mistake.

Of course, it should! Ensure you have MFC42U.DLL and last version COMMCTL32.DLL

Well, I've updated MFC42U.DLL to the newest version and... I can properly add the plugin using the configuration dialog "LS-plugins" now.
Unfortunately I still can't see any formated view of the logs :-(
I can't update COMCTL32.DLL (not COMMCTL32.DLL) cause the system crashes at sturtup if i put another version of this DLL. The current one is:
File version: 5.81
Product version: 5.50.4916.400
Any other ideas?

My COMCTL32 is 6.00.2800.1106.
But simple replacing COMCTL32 it is really can be dangerous in our days. :(

It seems i have to make some investigation there. My NT is NT4 with SP6, VS6 SP5, IE6 SP1 and October 2002 Platform SDK installed. I cannot say definitely where it comes from. So, please, let me couple of days to check it.
And to fix existing bugs. :)

It's OK now on WinNT :-)

BTW: As I see how it works for the first time (I've not try it under other OS) - I must say: IT'S WONDERFUL!!!
Thanks for it :-)

Several suggestions

Post by *djk »

Several suggestions:
- Could you add highlighting of the current row? It's now difficult to see where you are.
- Could you add shortcut for filtering (or make a typical context menu key works) (I hate a mouse)?
- When I open a filter form it would be nice if there was a button to copy current row values to parametres of filter.

BTW: Why "Time" parameter doesn't work in filter? (it's disabled)

I have problems downloading the plug-in. Can someone else host it at a different address? Thank you!

All these features are planned (partially already implemented) except copying description to filter.

Current filter very dumb - just compares values. So filtering by time will leave in view events only for 1 sec. Not so meaningfull(IMHO) . In the future i want to improuve filtering by time interval and regular expression for description.

Sorry. I have a problem with my FTP server. I even can't upload the new version of EventLog and TCmenu. I hope it will be fixed in a few days. Current version available on Maxwish's site.
