For separate trees:
Help wrote:UpdateTreeAtStartup=1 Determines whether a separate Tree is expanded up to the current directory at startup (1) or only on the first directory change by the user (0).
For file panel tree:
Help wrote:OldStyleTree=0 This option works only for a tree in one of the two file panels:
0: Show Explorer-style tree for all drives
1: Always load full tree of a drive
2: Show expandable tree for current drive only
For both kind of trees:
Help wrote:Autotreechange=0 If set to 1, a single click on a directory in tree view switches to that directory in the other window.

when i open a folder, the *seperate* tree tab always expand the folder i'm in. i'd like it to be like file explorer where it stays the same until i actually press the expand button

For me too.

See Help > Configuration and Switches > Ini file settings

But there I only found this:

UpdateTreeAtStartup=1
Determines whether a separate Tree
is expanded up to the current directory at startup (1)
or only on the first directory change by the user (0).

But after that the tree will be synchronised always with the panel view.
I don't know how to keep the separate tree calm until you want to expand him.

In Explorer it is actually an option (but not set by default): File -> Options -> View -> Navigation pane -> Expand to open folder

I agree that it could be nice to be able to enable/disable the "Expand to open folder" in TC too - you should put a request for the feature in: TC suggestions (English)
