Builtin text editor gives error on certain drives

Post by *dungn »

I experience a strange issue in Windows 11 where i use OSMount-application to create a RAMdrive with NTFS partition. I can copy and write files to this drive without problems, but when i try to edit a (text) file for example using the builtin editor (F4) and save the file, an error message say with title 'Notepad' and message 'Incorrect function'. I am using this method for years without any problem. I tried to revert back from Total Commander version 11 to version 10 but i get the same error message. I do not get this problem on any regular drives. Using other editors like Visual Studio Code i can edit and save the file without problem.

There is no internal TC editor.
TC by default just calls Notepad from the OS.
Windows 11 Home, Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.3915)
TC 11.51 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1391a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.5.2.0, Listary Pro 6.3.2.88
QAP 11.6.4.2.1 x64

Try this:
in TC's Configuration go to "Edit/View"
In the field "Editor" change:
notepad.exe
to:
notepad.exe "%1"
License #524 (1994)
Danish Total Commander Translator
TC 11.51 32+64bit on Win XP 32bit & Win 7, 8.1 & 10 (22H2) 64bit, 'Everything' 1.5.0.1391a
TC 3.60b4 on Android 6, 13, 14
TC Extended Menus | TC Languagebar | TC Dark Help | PHSM-Calendar

You are absolutely right, there is no internal editor.

And petermad, since there is no internal editor, F4 just called the default Windows's Notepad.exe it is not a Total Commander problem. But with your suggestion I have changed from notepad.exe to "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Programs\Microsoft VS Code\Code.exe" and edit files with VsCode from now on.

Notepad is now a Windows store app
"C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.WindowsNotepad_11.2406.9.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Notepad\Notepad.exe" --- maybe somehow that's the problem...
