Question about CRC check function

Post by *sebna »

Hi All,

My first post here but a long time TC user.

I run into some problems with my media files recently on my NAS and was testing them using CRC checksum.

I have created SHA256 and got the following error on test and I wonder what it means in practice:

read error:1, wrong checksum: 1.

How do I interpret the read error part?

What does it mean in practice?

When I did another quick test with a test file for which I altered content after creating checksum I got only wrong checksum: 1 as expected.

Thank you.

Read error means exactly that: there were errors while reading the file. This could mean that some sectors in which the files resides are corrupted or unreadable. It looks like you should make backups of the importants files as soon as possible; the disk(s) could fail at any time.
