Active Topics needs fixing.

Post by *NotNull »

Active Topics (link) needs fixing.
Currently it shows only topics from the TC Bug reports subforums. And from the Polish user-to-user forum, which seems an even stranger choice.

In my opinion *all* subforums should be included in Active Topics.

Why the split?
It was a response to:

It will still show up in New posts, Unread posts, Active topics and newsfeeds. These are all more useful than the last post in every forum.
And all posts are read by Ghisler, so they would be noticed by him, which is most important.

I'm happy to move your post back if your post is about merging older forums. I thought you meant to report a misconfiguration of the Active Topics.

Can you check the option "Enable active topics:" of each forum (ACP, FORUMS, Manage forums, Edit forum)?

OK, I have removed the Polish forum from active themes, and instead added the English forum, Polls, and Suggestions forums.

Shouldn't all subforums be included, like NotNull suggested? The website says "Active topics", not "Active topics from an unknown number of subforums".
Exactly which subforums are included now?

FWIW: Including a moderators-only forum (I believe TC has one) in the Active Topics, will only show up for moderators and not for regular accounts.

I don't think it's such a good idea to include non-English forums in this list.

Why not?

You still haven't answered the question about which subforums are currently included in "Active Topics." How are users supposed to know which ones are included? Are you going to inform them somewhere? The function seems not useful if users don't know what they're seeing.

Since the main official support forums are in English, German, and French, why the discrimination in favor of English-speaking users?

Including all subforums would allow users to choose what to ignore and what to engage with. Many users are multilingual and might want to follow discussions in multiple languages. By excluding non-English forums, you deny them this opportunity.

Exactly!

The good news: changing these Active Topics settings do not change the structure of the forum in any way.
So testing for a couple of weeks with all subforums included can be undone easily.

The new Active Topics is indeed better now. (still not good, but *better*)
I decided to no longer look at questions that are not included in Active Topics, so no more scraping info from all forum-corners for me :D
