What kind of Windows do you use with TC?

Post by *petermad »

Inspired by this topic: http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=25505 I thought it would be interesting to know how widespresd 64-bit Windows is among the users of this forum.

Also, since one of the main reasons for not making TC in a 64-bit version is that all current plugins are 32-bit, it would be interesting to know whether plugin writers currently have access to 64-bit Windows.

Total Commander user on Windows 32-bit and Windows 64-bit.
No, I have not developed any Total Commander plugins so far.

Why is "I use only 64-bit Windows - and I write TC plugins" missing?

This is my case.

Sorry - I suggest you wote "I use both 32- and 64-bit Windows - and I write TC plugins" then.

The poll can't be changed once it is made, unfortunately.

I don't think the poll will answer exactly the question you wanted to get an answer for. For instance, not too long ago I myself did not use 64-bit Windows (now I do), but I still could write programs for it and even test them in a virtual machine, since it is possible to start 64-bit VM on a 32-bit host (providing the processor is advanced enough). I'm sure, many of the developers who really have such access to 64-bit systems, but do not use them in everyday work, will answer "I use only 32-bit".

Thanks - i didn't know that.

Does that mean it has to be a 64-bit processor, or can that also be emulated?

Well, maybe the poll can give a clue as to how common 64-bit technology is among TC users - though I am aware that it is probably the superusers that votes here (at least right now).

It definitely has to be 64-bit (full simulation of 64-bit instruction set is possible too, but it would be awfully slow on 32-bit processors), and in addition should have hardware virtualization technology — at least, for VirtualBox (VMware is more advanced in this matter and sometimes can emulate 64-bit without AMD-V and VT-x, but not on every 64-bit processor; exact requirements are very vague).

Would have been nice if there was also the option to answer "I use TC on windows and on Linux with help of wine" :P

I use 64-bit and there is no problem regarding plug-ins. So for me, it is the best for TC.
