-[8.5b4] Reverting to old default font

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

-[8.5b4] Reverting to old default font

Post by *korg250 »

Hi.

I prefer the old default font instead of the new one, Segoe UI Semibold. Anybody knows which font was used?

Thanks.

Enter this into your wincmd.ini file;

Code: Select all

[AllResolutions]
FontName=Microsoft Sans Serif
FontNameDialog=Microsoft Sans Serif
FontNameWindow=Microsoft Sans Serif
FontSize=8
FontSizeWindow=8
FontWeight=700
FontWeightWindow=700

Here's the really old default , v6 and older using non-truetype MS Sans Serif (SSERIFE.FON) (Not reccomended. Use the newer above for unicode support);

Code: Select all

[AllResolutions]
FontName=MS Sans Serif
FontNameDialog=Microsoft Sans Serif
FontNameWindow=MS Sans Serif
FontSize=8
FontSizeWindow=8
FontWeight=700
FontWeightWindow=700

Fixed 8)

As I wrote above

MS Sans Serif hasn't been default for TC for several years.

I find Calibri, bold, size 11 to be most pleasant looking font for totalcmd's file list.

MS Sans Serif is the only font which is not blured by cleartype.
Please, get it back!
Calibri, Segoe, and another vista's fonts are too much ugly to be used by default.
IMHO, Tahoma and Verdana are the only solution.

That is wrong. Only the Dialog box font was changed to the truetype-version 'Microsoft Sans Serif'. The rest are (were) still defaulted to the old 'MS Sans Serif' bitmap font.
You can check this yourself by reverting to TC 8.50 Beta3. Then create a clean ini-file without any font-settings. Then go to the font options and you will see that total Commander defaults to the following;

File List font: MS Sans Serif,8,b
Main Window Font: MS Sans Serif,8,b
Dialog box font: Microsoft Sans Serif,8

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one annoyed by ClearType... :)
Anyways, I don't think you have to worry abot MS Sans Serif disapearing anytime soon. MS still uses it in some dialog boxes and old code in Windows 7 so It will probably be shipped with the next couple of Windows generations as well.
PS; See post no.3 in this thread for the 'old-font'.ini-setting

Yes. 'MS Sans Serif' is based on the old OpenType font (SSERIFE.FON) which was the default system font in Win3.1, Win95, and 98. (Win2000 changed it's default font to Tahoma). It has been a part of every Windows version since 3.1. 'Microsoft Sans Serif' is a TrueType version of 'MS Sans Serif' (micross.ttf). It was first shipped with Windows 2000 and supports more sizes than the old 'MS Sans Serif' (Which only supports size 8, 10, 12, 14, 18 ). There's also some very minor difference in certain letters like lower-case y and j, and upper-case R.
Hope I was of any help :wink:

I don't have TC8.5b3 at hand on the computer I am at right now, but I have TC 7.57a - and I actually did excactly what you describe with that version before I wrote my last posting - and here all three fonts defaults to Microsoft Sans Serif !

Also - MS Sans Serif does not support unicode http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=171930#171930

It was changed with version 6.0:
New in Total Commander 6.0 final (17.11.03):
[Unicode]
- If the user hasn't chosen a default font, use "Microsoft Sans Serif" instead of "MS Sans Serif" on Win2k/XP, because it supports Unicode
Later it was also changed for NT-based systems:
15.10.08 Fixed: Default to "Microsoft Sans Serif" font on NT-based systems also for dialog boxes (if the font exists)
But I'll check version 8.5b3 when I come home to see if you are right for this version.

Yes, it was "Microsoft Sans Serif" everyhwere - bold in the main window and file lists, and normal in the dialog boxes. "Microsoft Sans Serif" is a Truetype font with Cleartype just like "Segoe UI", so I don't think that cleartype is the problem.

I recommend that you give the new font a chance. I switched to it myself more than a year ago, and it also took me a few days to adapt to it. But it's really worth a try, it's easier to read once you are used to it.

My default font (I've never changed it) is still Microsoft Sans Serif even after update to beta4. Is it OK?

fleggy,
Try to start TC with clean INI: TOTALCMD.exe /i=new.ini.

@MVV> I am just curious if the default font should be changed to Segoe UI automatically after the update.

JFYI

Just tested with TC 8.5b3 32bit and 64bit under Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8 - they all use Miscosoft Sans Serif for all three font settings and not MS Sans Serif :!:
