It would be great but

Here is a little suggestion on how the tab menu could look in Total Commander.

Of course the tab menu should be shown on cm_SwitchToNextTab and cm_SwitchToPreviousTab too.
suggestion would be just much better.

What about a "Keyboard map"?.
Every user will be able to define his own function keys.

i.e. : I'm using for same function (search):
F3 in some windows programs
F5 in my editor
Alt+F7 in Total Commander
F7 in Total Commander (lister)
Ctrl+F in IE and Acrobat
... and so ...

What exactly do you mean? We already have Redefine hotkeys...

Yes, but is'nt a VISUAL format.

A table similar the one that exists in help (Keyboard layout), that includes ALL keys, and it variants:
[in combobox]
F1 Help [cm_HelpIndex]
Alt+F1 Change left drive [cm_LeftOpenDrives]
Ctrl+F1 File display 'brief' [cm_SrcShort]
...

I'm considering custom commands cm_switchtotab1 to cm_switchtotab10,
This is a good idea, and this one might be more useful. I use tabs a fair bit, so I know :):

I'd like to access tabs NOT by knowing their absolute position, because that can't be easily gained by glancing at the tab. It would be much more efficient if accelerator keys could be employed.

e.g. I have a tab which I can name &Important Files.

I'd like to hit a hotkey and the letter I to move to that tab. The above suggestion could possibly accomplish this, since the letter I would select that tab from the menu ... [or cyclethrough all the tabs starting with I if there are multiple]

Also sounds good, but you can do it with Ctrl+D!
I have just checked it, it works! Here you define directories and title (that can contain & for accelerator key).
With tabs - their contents is various and the should be used rather temporarily, so I am still thinking 1..x is good.
But I have found a workaround.

Like mentioned, above, there could be assigned a shortcut for selecting Tab, eg. Ctl+Alt+T or some other (better, quicker one) then after pressing that initial combination you press other hotkey to open the selected tab, eg.
Ctr+Alt+T, I to open the example tab mentioned above:
tab "&Important Files" or press 1 to 9 to open the fisrt tab, second tab etc.
In case of conflict - someone makes a tab "&1 - tab" then this setting is more important - tab "&1 - tab" should be open, not the first tab. But only if user adds ampersand before 1 - &1
:-)

That's fine for switching directories in the current tab - I use this extensively and love it.

But I don't see what this has to do with switching tabs? Or am I not understanding you properly?

Firstly - I never used & with Ctrl+D, just did not try it. Thanks for info it works.

it is my hapiness :)

Secondly - do you rename tabs? I use them temporarily for short time, (I am to lazy to change name of tab, but someone may find it useful). For directories which I use more often - I use Ctrl+D.
But (as it can be seen further in my post) I agree that actualy it might be a good idea, but, IMHO, providing we have solution for both "ampersand& users" and for lazy ones who remember the position of tab and would rather use 1, 2, 3, etc to access tabs.

please assign shortcuts by default! :)

you can't work with many tabs without direkt shortcuts, especially when you have to switch often between some of many tabs. if you have some similar tabs you also have to check everytime, if you get the right tab. with direkt-shortcuts, you don't have to look or thinking, just jump.

btw. tcmd is the best! i'm using it since at least 2.x.

Is that comment about Christian?!!!
