Fine that you are happy now! However, you should test the installation procedure before relying on it in real life. Could be that the installer stops working if one or the other file is missing.
Really don't want to nag you but I still regard norfies method as the most appropriate for your problem.

Knowing the generosity of Christian I'd like to add that it is not forbidden IF he has got a registered version. Somewhere in this forum (I think) Christian has made clear that a registered user can use TC on more than one computer - even if members of his/her family use the TC on the users home PC, Christian will not explicitely object to that.

Wilhelm

2 norfie:
The license agreement reads:
The registered version may be installed on as many computers as desired, as long as it is used by only one person at any one time (I.e. one installation at home and one at the office used by the same person).
So really the key point is: has he registered a single version or has he not? Only he himself can give the answer...

Guys guys guys, relax and take a valium. Geezzz are you all law students or something?
Firstly 2Lefteous: No I don't want to make any changes to the English language file of the program at all. I was merely curious as to why there was no english language file in that Language directory inside the CAB installer file. That's all. I have no need for the standalone file, but thanks for providing the link anyway.
2The rest of you wannabe lawyers and patent attorneys: Come on! I can't speak for Christian himself but judging by what I have read him say in previous posts I honestly do not believe that he would seriously object to what I am doing in the slightest. I don't care what the exact wording of the licence text says. If I read all software licence agreements and abided by them all to the absolute letter of the law, there's no way in the world I would even be able to use a computer at all - and I'm guessing that neither would any of you either! Have you ever read completely a M$ licence agreement for Office or in fact Winblows? They are horrendous!!
Anyway, YES, strictly speaking I am changing the program by modifying the installer and YES, it is likely to remain installed as shareware for greater than 1 month, BUT balancing these things out I believe are the facts that I am *not* going to provide my registration key file and it is highly likely that I will be the only (infrequent) user of the program anyway due to the n00balicious nature of the computer owners.
Christian himself has said that his position on software copy protection is that it is far better to encourage new users to register legally than to punish those who do not (and indirectly inconvenience the legal users at the same time). Now, with that in mind I can tell you the people who own the computers I will be installing extra copies of TC on are not script kiddies or warez junkies, they are 50+ y.o. people who are still incredibly excited when they manage to successfully retrieve an e-mail but who then freak out if it contains something new and bizarre called an 'attachment'.
It may just happen though that one or more of these people will become interested enough in computers to delve a bit deeper and they may discover the delights of using TC when they've been watching me over my shoulder. If that happens, and they then become registered users as a result, how would that be a bad thing? I see myself as helping to spread the word to a market that is not savvy enough to discover it themselves via the webpage.
One other thing before I sign off on this thread. It has always been a stated goal of Windows Commander and Total Commander that the program should be small enough to fit on 1 floppy disc for (I understood) the exact purpose I am intending to use it for in this thread. This has been one of the selling points - the low overhead/bloat factor compared to its competitiors. Now, granted, in this day and age of fewer and fewer computers even having floppy drives and those that do not actually working through lack of use, this is much less of a requirement, however, the program as is right now no longer complies with this stated aim. I see what I am doing as only restoring a feature that has vanished due to progress.
Now before you all jump on the soapboxes and unleash your unbridled vitriol unpon me from a great height, let me leave you with a very well reasoned and written article on the subject of software piracy and copy protection that Christian himself might very well agree with. It is an interesting read and one that I think you may enjoy.

This will be my last post in this thread so you can all have the last word. Flame away.
P.S. Thank you to Clo for providing the suggestion I needed

Hello !
• Nice statement, and good link, it's worth a good mark !
- In anyway, to distribute the program as "Shareware" with a modified version, you may send a request to Ch. Ghisler :
¤ Final dot !
{ Apart : I'ld have some interesting info about licences in France… Unfortunately, you haven't an e-mail here… }
Kind regards,

Indeed this is explicitly allowed. I don't see any reasons why someone should pay multiple times for using the program himself.Knowing the generosity of Christian I'd like to add that it is not forbidden IF he has got a registered version. Distribution means e.g. selling the shareware version on a CD coming with a magazine, not taking the program to friends. That's not restricted.«Please contact me if you want to distribute the program with a different installation program, changed files etc.»

Why install.. Easier to RUN-from-diskette
Hi,
Nice idea to remove unnecessary files from TotalCmd to make it
fit into a diskette.
BUT EASIER: If you only want to use TotalCmd temporarily on a friends computer, you don't need to install it at all, or bother with CAB files!
Just run it directly from the diskette! (or USB-mem or CD or ...)
1. Make a copy of your own installed TotalCmd directory and remove the suggested unnecessary files from the copy. Of cause also remove any plugins etc.., if it will be stored on a diskette.
2. Copy the directory to a diskette, e.g. with directory name a:\tcmd\
3. Create a:\tc_start.bat file to start totalcmd with the INI files
in the program directory. e.g.
4. Now insert the diskette in your friends computer. Run the bat file on the diskette to start TotalCommander.
