In windows there is a possibility to create shell extentions that display icon overlays for files. Total Commander does not show these overlays. (And AFAIK no other file manager except Windows Explorer does).
For an example of what these overlays are you can look at TortoiseSVN http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/.

IMHO it is not very hard to implement this. Not harder than already imlemented per-file context-menus.
