Is tc 7.56a portable and Cable Matters USB 3.0 compatible?
Good morning, I need to transfer data from the old to the new PC, I would like to know if the 7.56a portable version of tc is compatible with the Cable Matters USB 3.0 Data Transfer Cable PC to PC for Windows. I use windows 10 pro
If it is not compatible, which version of tc can I buy and how does the license work?
Thank you.

Total Commander is fully functional without a license. A license disables the nag screen at start up and displays your name in the title bar (and some info in the Help/About dialog).
A license is installed by placing the license file WINCMD.KEY in the program folder or in the folder where the WINCMD.INI file is stored.
You only need 1 license. Here are some quotes:
ghisler(Author) wrote: 2020-12-04, 14:54 UTC Yes it is! The only exception would be if we were forced from the outside to no longer offer free updates, e.g. if we had to pay a patent licence for each copy for a function in a newer version (even for free updates).
ghisler(Author) wrote: 2022-10-13, 14:47 UTC Yes, all keys with licence number 9474 and higher work with all versions of Total Commander, including the 16-bit version. You have unlimited upgrade and downgrade rights. You also need just one license for all your PCs and virtual machines, even if you run Total Commander on multiple at the same time. So no need to purchase an extra license for Windows 3.x if you already have a license for a current Windows.
Re: Is tc 7.56a portable and Cable Matters USB 3.0 compatible?
There is no license question here.
The TC license allows you to use any version on any computer you own or use.
I don't know compatibility of specific cables but I always did such transfers using a network connection
in the same WLAN.

Re: Is tc 7.56a portable and Cable Matters USB 3.0 compatible?
scarsone,
Here is a list of cables that have been tested and are working - Supported cables for USB cable connection.
Support for USB transfer has been added in TC v7.55 (in 2010) so it should work in 7.56a. Not really sure if Windows does not need to install a driver, though. Windows should do this automatically if necessary, as long as it has an internet connection, but I can't really remember the details, that was 10 years ago.
A licence is not relevant in this case, you may use TC freely for 30 days, after that you are required to buy a licence, but TC's functionality is not impaired.
EDIT:
Here's a FAQ for USB transfer using TC.

[1] Do you mean you are going to use "PORT Connection To Other PC" feature?
And this is your cable:
https://www.cablematters.com/pc-1177-137-usb-30-data-transfer-cable.aspx
This function is pretty hardware (rather than Total Commander version) dependant.
[2] As you call it "7.56a portable version" it drops a hint that you are using not the original Total Commander installation, but rather a customized pack and it would be good if it is fully functional.
If you have a Total Commander license (in most cases, it's wincmd.key in a program directory) it is for life, so you do not need to purchase another key for the next software version.
If you don't have a Total Commander license you are not forced to buy a license for a single operation:
Total Commander for Windows is a Shareware (demo version) program. This means that you can test it for a period of 30 days. After testing the program, you must either order the full version, or delete the program from your harddisk.

As I can see under the link, your cable is listed there.Hacker wrote: 2023-02-25, 15:05 UTC Here is a list of cables that have been tested and are working - Supported cables for USB cable connection.

https://www.ghisler.com/history900.txt18.10.16 Fixed: Some USB link cables seem to need other GUID to connect (32/64)
Don't know why this cable is still not on the list though, I have used it a dozen times and it's fully compliant to the Windows Easy Transfer standard. Only older Delock Easy Transfer USB 2.0 Vista cable is there.

Could you take a picture of your cable and reduce the width to 180 pixels, so I could use it for my page? Unfortunately I can't just use the image from Delock, for legal reasons.Don't know why this cable is still not on the list though, I have used it a dozen times and it's fully compliant to the Windows Easy Transfer standard.

Good. Although I would add a note about TC version ≥ 9.0 to get the transfer working.

Re: Is tc 7.56a portable and Cable Matters USB 3.0 compatible?
I bought the cable and it is recognized by tc 7.56a, but I'm having trouble because I don't understand how to set up the software on the two PCs. I select the cable matters from the small drop-down menu, from both PCs, but how do I proceed for the data transfer? Thank you very much.
Re: Is tc 7.56a portable and Cable Matters USB 3.0 compatible?
In the menu go to "Net" and click on "PORT Connection To Other PC". Do that on both PC's and choose Server on one and Client on the other. Set the Server first.how do I proceed for the data transfer? Thank you very much.
If you wnat TC to automatically react to the Cable being inserted you can run TcUsbRun.exe once on each computer.
