(solved by reboot) Stuck on splash screen after migrating old settings to new PC

Post by *Bitman_ »

Hi,

I'm migrating from my old company laptop to the new one and experiencing issues with Total commander.

Steps done:
  • I have installed TC 10.50 and it was working.
  • I have copied the %APPDATA%/Roaming/GHISLER folder
  • I have copied the company's wincmd.key and also the plugins directory into Program Files/totalcmd.
When I try to start TC the splash screen shows up and it hangs there.

I have tried the following steps without any luck:
  • Tried to remove wincmd.ini
  • Tried to remove plugins folder (using wcx_xz, sftp4tc, sftpplug)
  • Tried to remove wincmd.key (however I think it was nonsense, the license key have read successfully, as it was visible on the splash screen)
  • Tried to uninstall Total commander, cleaned the Program Files/totalcmd and Roaming/GHISLER folders and made a clean, new install
  • Tried starting Total commander with safe mode, by pressing SHIFT key during startup.
  • Tried starting Total commander with totalcmd64.exe /i="%temp%\wincmd.ini"
  • Tried to run as administrator

I have no other idea what to do. It's supposed to be a full clean install now and still doesn't work.
Do you have any tips what should I check or what should I have missed?

FYI: Both the old and new laptops are using Symantec Endpoint Protection antivirus, I see no logged actions on its GUI, and I am not able to disable its protection even temporarily due to company's Windows policy.

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome Bitman_

sorry for the trouble and thanks for the good description.

Right now I can't see what happens. Only that there are some old outdated path information somewhere...

Try this
- unpack or install TC to a folder with write access, like C:\Temp\TC
- launch TC, should be working fine
- close TC
--(Maybe try this too:
Create an empty text file named WINCMD.INI in C:\Temp\TC
and write only two lines to it:
[Configuration]
UseIniInProgramDir=7
)
- copy your wincmd.key to C:\Temp\TC
- launch TC, should be registered now

Hi,

Thanks for your tips.
This wasn't making any difference, but it turned out a Windows update was stuck, which caused the issue.
A restart solved the issue finally (soft restart stuck, windows update installed successfully after hard reboot).

Thanks for your help anyway!

Best Regards,
