OK - do we have an option - to Disable this second sub-list: frequently used folders?
Right-click on the list and disable: "Show most frequently used directories"

Thats a strange explanation what problem you have with it.
Following this you should never use TC version 11 as its full of new functions
you didn't request or expect :)
Windows 11 Home, Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.3915)
TC 11.55 RC1 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1391a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.5.2.0, Listary Pro 6.3.2.88

AntonyD wrote: 2023-05-04, 12:53 UTC UseIniInProgramDir=7 - does it should mean that ALL other stuff which TC will produce/create/temporarily save -
also should be somewhere "InProgramDir" - and not somewhere outside???
Let's just say - it's generally strange that there are some paths that are OUTSIDE the installation directory by default.
+1 ... for %COMMANDER_PATH%\tcDirFrq.txt ... instead of ...
C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\GHISLER\tcDirFrq.txt

cm_ConfigSaveSettings also updates the modification date of file "tcDirFrq.txt".

Who said that it is a sub-dir of TC ?
The default location for tcDirFrq.txt is
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\GHISLER\

2ghisler(Author)
Is that true?

16.03.23 Added: Set storage location of most frequently used directories file tcDirFrq.txt: [Configuration] DirUsageLocation=, default %LOCALAPPDATA%\GHISLER\ (32/64)

Why is that file located at AppData on default?
I would suggest to keep all TC related files into the TC folder (or where I have located my Log files),
and use AppData only if there is no write access on the TC folder.
Especially if UseIniInProgramDir=7 is used.

Thanks for considering it.

It's %LocalAppData%, not %AppData% - there's a difference which admittedly is only relevant for domains (Active Directory) in corporate environments.

As I see it the reason is simple: Because wincmd.ini is located in %AppData% by default. There are many situations (corporate environments is one of them) where the TC directory isn't writable. TC has been installed to %ProgramFiles% by default for many years now, which made it necessary to place wincmd.ini where it can be written - this is why it's in %AppData% by default. Of course, it should be possible to set a different location, especially considering a portable TC. It's debatable whether or not this location should be automatically changed when UserIniInProgramDir is set to the TC directory. It could make the code more complicated and the help file would need to explain this properly. IMHO it shouldn't be changed silently as this may surprise users.

Is there any setting on Wincmd.ini to autodelete TCDIRFRQ.TXT when Tc 11 is closed by user, i think it's important when using Tc on portable mode

Btw. Amazing increase of Zip compression & verify speed :D

%$LOCAL_APPDATA%\GHISLER is also the default directory for the thumbnail database
%TEMP%\totalcmd.log is the default location for TC's logfile
%TEMP%\tcftp.log is the default location for TC's FTP logfile

So it is not all TC files that are kept in the "%COMMANDER_INI%\.." directory.

But since the directory for the tcDirFrq.txt cannot be set via the GUI, I suggest that the default location is the same as set for the thumbnail database, unless set otherwise via the DirUsageLocation parameter in wincmd.ini

Well, you can just disable "Show most frequently used directories"

Thank you for pointing this out!
Based on this, I have now defined the setting that is sufficient for me.

wincmd.ini - section [Configuration]

Code: Select all

DirUsageLocation=%COMMANDER_PATH%
Configuration > Save Settings ... creates the file "tcDirFrq.txt" in this path.

Well, you can just disable "Show most frequently used directories"

In a GUI settings I could not find any related new option for that.

Omg....

I found your prev. answer. Thanks again. But Again - the ability does exist but in non intuitive way...
And besides, this list is more often called by a keyboard combination. And how can I call this list and this submenu?

And obviously that such path (just like an option for dis/enb it) must be set via GUI settings.
Not via the manual editing.
Mr.Ghisler - pls consider it!

I'm still heavily questioning the need for a separate "tcDirFrq.txt" file for storing the directory access frequencies.

If you don't need it, disable it.
You personal opinion may not be the same as other users.
As answered in the other thread this file is not an ini file.
