Good morning,
sorry but these are the first times I've used TC and I'm faced with this problem.
Unlike explorer, .ico files do not display the preview in the icon image (detail view), but only the associated program.
Is there a way to fix the inconvenience?
Thank you

No such problem here.
Try this: In TC put the cursor on an .ico file. Then in TC's menu choose: Files -> Associate with. What is .ico files associated with on your system?
On my Windows 7 PC it is:
On my Windows 10 PC it is: nothing (blank field)
In both cases I see the icons, not the associated program in TC's file panels.
In TC's Associate dialog, if you want to remove (disable) an association, you have to choose the first item in the list: [none] and click OK

Look here - viewtopic.php?t=80535 - same problem
So download, unpack and run this program (for "ICO" extension) https://www.totalcommander.ch/win/tools/registryinfo.zip
Post output here.

Apps > Default apps > Select default values by file type
Set default values for file types

You could also just place the cursor on an icon file, then choose menu
Files - Associate With - Edit type - Change icon
and set the icon file name to:
%1

Re: preview image on icon
I solved it by associating the files to be opened with "Photo" in Windows (it doesn't work with Photo Legacy in Windows), in this way previews are displayed on the icons of all the associated files including PNG, JPG, ico etc.
Unfortunately Windows Photo isn't that great, I usually use FastStone but I haven't found a way to associate files and display previews on file icons.
Is it possible to fix this problem so that we can associate the files with being opened by any program?
