A few questions regarding my license
Hello,
A year or two ago I purchased a TC license for Windows, I have been using TC ever since.
I would have two questions regarding this, can I install a newer version of TC and use my previous license for it? (I purchased the license for TC 11.03 64 bit) and could I use the same license on a second computer? I would like to install TC on my work computer too, can I use the same license or I should purchase a second independent license for my work laptop?

ghisler(Author) wrote: 2022-10-13, 14:47 UTC Yes, all keys with licence number 9474 and higher work with all versions of Total Commander, including the 16-bit version. You have unlimited upgrade and downgrade rights. You also need just one license for all your PCs and virtual machines, even if you run Total Commander on multiple at the same time.
Re: A few questions regarding my license
TC licenses can be used with any TC version. IIRC there was a switch in regards to license files in the early days (probably in the 90s), but those are not relevant anymore.
Ghisler is pretty liberal in regards to licenses and licensing. However, I would be careful copying your own license to a company work computer. I suggest to ask the IT department if it's OK with them (if it is about a company PC), and to make sure your license doesn't get into the wrong hands. If a license is found in public, it won't work in new TC versions; you'll only get a warning about that fact and TC will stay unregistered.

Re: A few questions regarding my license
I'm using TC with a license but without a keyfile to keep it safe and to avoid having the company/user name in screenshots.
This is ok, according to Ghisler.

How use licenze without key?ZoSTeR wrote: 2025-03-31, 19:46 UTC EN: It is sufficient to have a license, the key does not have to be used.
I have only WINCMD.KEY.
Re: A few questions regarding my license
The license can be in a file named wincmd.key or saved in the registry - value Key in Software\Ghisler\Total Commander (HKLM or HKCU).
What Ghisler meant with that statement is that you can ignore the 30 day trial limit and keep using TC if you own a license, but without installing that license/key - with the obvious caveat that TC will show the nag screen.

Re: A few questions regarding my license
Use it without WINCMD.KEY for longer than 1 month, selecting 1, 2 or 3, each time you start TC.

Just do not utilize your WINCMD.KEY anywhere and anyhow (i.e. do not put it itself, or its archived copy in the TC directory, or its binary representation in the registry*).
Of course, doing so implies you would see 'UNREGISTERED' in the title bar and would need to push those [1][2][3] buttons upon launch/restart.
Nevertheless, since you do have a valid license [WINCMD.KEY], your TC usage in such a scenario is considered eligible.
Notes*:
- you can put your WINCMD.KEY directly in the TC directory
- you can pack your WINCMD.KEY into the tcmdkey.zip archive and put it in the TC directory
- you can convert your WINCMD.KEY into the bytes array and put it in the Windows registry as such

---- using my approach (PowerShell based): https://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=84672
----- or using some other (.vbs scripts or so) ones.
In those cases, TC would recognize your license, and you would see your nice name in the title bar.
For whatever reason (security, anonymity, etc., name it), you might prefer not to use any of the above mentioned ways and still remain a legit user, though having said inconviences.
