you just saved me 2 hours of workign with terrible lbm viewers...
do you know btw if there is a plugin for msPaint to edit lbm files?

Maybe
Paint.NET (Opensource) is worth a look for you.
Their webpage does not reveal if the lbm-format is supported though.
Paint.NET requieres WinXP, it won't run on Win9x/ME.
