If you select all the files in the current directory, the checkbox Only search in selected directories/files will be enabled, make sure it's checked.
Of all the planets I've been to, this one is my favorite.

I don't see why this checkbox cannot be enabled at all times

The checkbox is enabled only if you have selected at least one file.

reinstein,
You can use the Quicksearch, too...

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

However if you have a lot of sub-directories and a lot of files in the same directory, to search only the current directory's files you have to find the first file and select to the end. This is quite a bit of typing as compared to clicking a "Don't recurse through subdirectories" button.

Yes, it would be quite a lot of clicking and browsing, but you can easily select all files in the panel with Ctrl-A in a single keystroke

Not at all, if you don't have the Select All command to select directories too, a simple Ctrl+Gray+ should do the trick.
Otherwise select the first directory, then press Ctrl+Gray+ followed by Alt+Gray-.

Simple ehh

You could also jump up one directory (..), the one you were in will be highlighted, then mark it (INS, Right click whatever) then Alt-F7

But I agree a "Do not recurse" checkbox would be nice

That wouldn't help...

A lot of good ideas, but they require too much thinking. When I want to find a file I press A+F7 immediately, then I have to stop and say, wait, I only want the current directory, escape out, type some selection keys, and then find again. It's just not intuitive, like "don't recurse thru subdirs" would be.
