It is possible to store metainformation about a picture (for example fotographer, object description, places, categories or keywords) in the image-file, using the IPTC-standard. The freeware Exifer is an excellent tool to do this (it works in batch-mode too).
There is just no good software to search for pictures using the IPTC-metadata! For the time being I use the freeware IPTCext, which adds Windows Explorer fields showing IPTC metadata. The content plugin ShellDetails displays them in Total Commander. That's a good substitute for picture databases. IPTCext works fine, but it changes a lot in my system.
To have a content plugin showing ITPC-infos directly would be nice.
